Club Development Workshops have proved a hit with clubs in South Wales, and are set to continue across the region in 2014.

Over the last few weeks, cycling clubs in South Wales have met for the first in a new series of club development workshops held by Welsh Cycling looking to help clubs in Wales grow and develop in 2014.

Clubs converged on Newport and Cardiff for the workshops which were focused around the following topics:

  • The Go-Ride programme
  • Coaching
  • Club online management tool

Attendees completed a short welcome activity where they listed their strengths, weaknesses and where Welsh Cycling could assist the clubs development. Delegates were introduced to the two different strands to the Go-Ride programme in terms of youth coaching & the accreditation process to becoming a Clubmark sports club.

Matt Hill, a coach at Newport Velo attended the first session in Newport "It was really good to go through your initial topics;Go-Ride, coaching and online tools, as they form the cornerstones of a club and need to be understood to be successful going forward."

The coaching workshop looked at the opportunities on offer for coaches to become involved in sessions that would help them to complete their coaching awards and as an opportunity to gain further professional development by learning from other coaches. Discussions were had as to how Welsh Cycling can help coaches to complete their awards which then give us the opportunity to offer higher level courses, and how clubs can help Welsh Cycling develop their coach and education programmes.

The online club management tool workshop showed members how they could use the tool to help manage club activities such as club memberships, club affiliation and help to promote the club online to attract new members.

Both events were positive and it was clear that members are passionate about their clubs, and the sport of cycling overall. Welsh Cycling are committed to supporting our clubs and will help clubs to develop, with workshops planned to continue into 2014 across Wales. Dates and locations will be announced shortly.
