What is Bikeability?

Cycle Training Home

Bikeability is cycling proficiency for the 21st century, aimed at adults and primarily young people to teach the skills to ride safely on roads to make trips by bike.

Bikeability is delivered by registered providers including School Sport Partnerships across England. Courses are delivered by qualified Instructors and Assistant Instructors to young people.

To be an instructor or assistant instructor in a Bikeability scheme you should be

  •    -  passionate about cycling
  •    -  a confident, regular cyclist able to ride on roads happily
  •    -  willing to work with groups of young people
  •    -  over 18 for Instructors or Over 16 for Assistant Instructors (on date of course starting)

Bikeability training for the younger generation ensures life-long skills of safe cycling are instilled at a young age, while encouraging a healthy lifestyle, boosting confidence and developing independence.

Within schools, cycling can feature in education in ways you might not have imagined. There’s more to cycling than just contributing to the five hour plan, through cycling children can develop their bike skills while improving their maths and geography with simple exercises that combine the subjects through practical and engaging exercises.

Children can calculate the distance to school and can work out the cost of repairing a bike as well as planning routes, exploring local trails, investigating cycle paths and plotting a safe journey. Cycling fits into just about every subject from geography to science!
