GB tops medal table in the London Olympic Velodrome after the final day of racing.

Great Britain concluded four days of top class action in London with Gold for Chris Hoy in the sprint and Bronze for Laura Trott in the Omnium. The GB Men’s Team Pursuit squad of Clancy, Burke, Kennaugh and Thomas took silver in the final against Australia while Victoria Pendleton and Jess Varnish battled in a gruelling three round Keirin programme, with Pendleton reaching the final while Varnish reached the minor final.

Undoubted highlight of the Sunday session was Chris Hoy’s peerless performance in the sprint. Hoy began with a stunning sub ten second 200m qualification, the only rider to do so, before dispatching Nakagawa in the 1/8 finals. Hoy then drew powerhouse Gregory Bauge of France in the quarters, beating the massive Frenchman 2-1 before meeting German Robert Forstermann in the semi finals. A 2-0 victory over Forstermann set up a final with the German’s teammate Max Levy.

Medal Table - London
Rank Team G S B Total
1 Great Britain 5 1 2 8
2 Australia 2 3 2 7
3 Germany 2 2 1 5
4 China 1 0 2 3
5 Colombia 1 0 0 1
5 Spain 1 0 0 1
5 Lithunia 1 0 0 1
5 United States 1 0 0 1
9 France 0 2 1 3
9 New Zealand 0 1 2 3

In match one Levy led away and took Hoy up and down the banking before the sprint opened up and Hoy powered away to take the win. 1-0 to Hoy. Match two and Hoy employed different tactics, leading out. At the bell both riders dropped in from the rail, Levy slipped ahead and pulled away. However Hoy came back under Levy, who eventually capitulated to Hoy’s speed and determination. 2-0 and gold for Hoy.

If Hoy was the crowd’s hero, Trott was its undoubted heroine on the final day of competition. Poised in third position after three events, Trott looked good for bronze, and a great performance in the pursuit saw her close in on the silver medal position, with Australian Edmondson and Canadian Whitten ahead. However, 9th in the scratch race dropped Trott back to fourth overall. Trott had it all to do in the final event, the 500m TT, and didn’t disappoint, posting the fastest time of 35.642 and securing bronze.

The Men’s Team Pursuit squad had a long wait to ride off for gold against Australia – the qualifying taking place back on Thursday evening. Come the final and GB started fast, over half a second up on the Australian team in the opening few laps. However, by 1km, Australia had closed the gap and began to apply pressure. Moving into the final half of the ride, Bobridge, Dennis, Edmondson and Hepburn continued to chase down Clancy, Burke, Thomas and Kennaugh, the GB squad eventually fracturing in the final few laps. The Australians crossed the line in 3:54.615 after being inside world record pace for much of the ride.

Victoria Pendleton and Jess Varnish, after their recording breaking performance in the Team Sprint, had a gruelling battle in the Keirin which, due to a massive entry, had three rounds with two repechages. Varnish won her 1st round heat while Pendleton had to go through the repechage to progress. The GB pair had a 1-2 in the quarter finals, Varnish avoiding the repechage by a whisker following Vogel of Germany’s relegation. However, in the semis, Varnish just missed out on a medal final placing while Pendleton won her heat. Come the final though, it was clear that a heavy schedule had taken its toll, with Varnish finish last in the minor final and Pendleton overcome in the medal final.

Great Britain topped the medal table for the event, with eight in total, ahead of Australia who scooped seven.
