Day 2 - 22 August 2011

Day two of the National Youth and Junior Track Championships saw the Under 14 Girls and Boys Omniums, the Under 16 Boys Scratch and the Under 16 Girls Sprint competition in a 10 hour long marathon session.

Under 14 Girls Omnium

The Under 14 Girls were up first, their Omnium competition starting with a 1500m Individual Pursuit. From a bumper field of 26 riders, the top ten riders all managed to dip under 2:10, last week's National Omnium Series final winner Grace Garner of Leicestershire Road Club clocking 2:03.587. It wasn't quite enough, though - Megan Barker of Maindy Flyers - third on that occasion - took minimum points for the opening event with a 2:03.301.

Barker and Garner both cruised through the opening round of the Sprint competition - as did Barker's team mate Emily Haycox - fourth in the Omnium final. Sophie Capewell of Lichfield City CC won her heat, as did Eleanor Dickinson of Beacon Wheelers and Lucy Shaw of Solihull CC.

Runner-up in Manchester a week ago Paige Millward of Lyme Road Club had to settle for the Repechages after being drawn against Haycox in the first round. She couldn't repeat her series final form, though, losing out to Megan Lewis of Palmer Park Velo in the Reps - which also saw Lewis' team mate Abbie Dentus, Lucy Harper (Welwyn Wheelers) Emily Capewell (Lichfield City CC), Amy Smith (VC Jubilee) and Lulu Bartlett (Edinburgh RC) progress to the semi-finals.

There were no real surprises at the semi-final stage with Barker, Garner, Capewell and Haycox all progressing to the 1st-4th final. Dickinson led out the sprint in the final, but it was Garner that came through to take the win from Haycox with Barker coming through to take third.

The Scratch race saw Bartlett make an audacious move with just over two laps to go, pulling out a quarter of a lap lead over the field, but at the bell it was Garner leading the charge and coming through to take another point ahead of Barker and Millward.

The final event of the competition was the 500m Time Trial, which is run in reverse order of standing in the Omnium. With one heat remaining, Capewell led from Haycox - having been the first to dip under the 40 second barrier with a 39.665 - with Millward third. Barker bettered her team mate's time with a 39.532, but she couldn't match Garner who stormed round in 39.183 to take the Time Trial and clinch the Omnium title. Barker's second place in the Time Trial confirmed her second place overall and Haycox's fourth was good enough to seal the Bronze.

Under 14 Boys Omnium

The field of 35 riders for the Under 14 Boys Omnium was so large that the Scratch Race had to be run in two heats, with both heats scoring equal points towards the overall. But more of that later.

Joseph Fry of Welwyn Wheelers took last week's Omnium Series title and was favourite to repeat the feat at the Nationals - although runner-up Joel Partington of Eastlands Velo was likely to mount a serious challenge.

Two riders who hadn't really been in contention a week ago were impressive in the opening Individual Pursuit. Thomas Rotherham of Sport City Velo, like his brother Marr better known as a sprinter, clocked an impressive 1.57.736 while Dylan Cordukes of the Bristol Cycling Development Squad managed a 1.57.121. It was the usual suspects at the top of the leaderboard, though, with Partington second on 1.56.669, some way off Fry's 1.56.026.

All four cruised through the first round of the Sprint competition where they were joined in the semi-finals by Joseph Truman of i-team CC, Jack Payne of Eastlands Velo and his team mate Harris Redgrove. They were joined, via the Repechages, by a trio of Wolverhampton Wheelers riders - Ryan Phillips, James Ireson and Jack Escritt - Jack Plumley of Welwyn Wheelers and Jake Howes of Hillingdon Slipstreamers.

Cordukes, who likes to give his Sprint opponents a big lead and then reel them in, progressed to the 1st-4th final, as did Parkington and Truman. Not so Fry, though. In his semi against Ireson and Escritt he found himself the victim of some clever team tactics with Escritt and Irseon taking him up to the fence through turns three and four at the bell, Escritt ahead with Ireson ticked in behind. As they entered turn four, Ireson used the height of the track to his advantage, jumping from behind Fry and opening a huge lead which he managed to hold to the end.

Cordukes had the chance to take the lead in the competition with Fry now riding for no better than fifth, but his usual tactics didn't pay off and he couldn't manage better than fourth - Partington taking the win ahead of Ireson. Fry lost out to Payne in the 5th-8th Final, coming in 2nd - now tied on seven points with Cordukes. With minimum points up for grabs in the Scratch races - and with Fry and Cordukes allocated to different heats, here was a chance for one rider to move ahead. Fry duly won his heat and then Cordukes pulled out another surge-from-behind win to take the other. Tied on eight points going in to the final event.

Once again, the 500m Time Trial came down to the final heat. With just Fry and Cordukes left to run, Payne's 37.916 was just enough to head Partington who'd managed a 37.924. Fry was impressive, smooth and fluid - and quick - clocking 37.654 - but Cordukes tore the cranks off his Koga with a sensational 37.498 to take the Time Trial and the National title. Fry secured Silver and Partington's fourth in the Time Trial was good enough to secure third overall.

Under 16 Girls Sprint

Qualifying for the Under 16 Girls Sprint competition saw some impressive times with six girls breaking the 13 second barrier. Hannah Blount of Derby Mercury just scraped under with a 12.945 but then there were two girls around the twelve and three quarters mark - Megan Boyd of Sportcity Velo and Imogen Farlie of Team Terminator on 12.796 and 12.716 respectively. Ellie Coster of Bush Healthcare couldn't quite break 12.5 - clocking 12.640 - but Emily Kay (Halesowen) could, just, taking second place in the rankings with a 12.468. Fastest, by far, was the impressive Danielle Khan who recorded a 12.206 to top the draw for round 1.

Megan Riach (Discovery Junior CC) gave Khan too much space in her first round match and Khan took full advantage of it to proceed. There were no real surprises in any of the first round matches with Kay, Coster, Farlie, Boyd and Blount all progressing to the quarter finals. They were joined from the Reps by Melissa Lowther of Aire Valley and Kim English of Welwyn Wheelers.

Khan eased past English in the quarter-finals in two rides and Kay dispatched Lowther without the need of a decider. Coster crossed the line first in her opening match with Blount but was relegated to second place. She took the second and third matches comfortably, though and progressed to the Semis. Farlie took the opening match against Boyd, who took the second to tie up their quarter, before sealing the deal in the third.

Khan was looking favourite now, dominating the semi-final with Blount and taking it on two. Coster had to work harder against Kay, but nicked both opening matches to go through to the final. In the first match of the Final it was Coster who seized the advantage, taking the lead at the bell but Khan took control through turn four and took the win on the line. The second match was even closer with Coster controlling the race from the front, but once again Khan had enough to ease past on the run in to take the Gold. Kay beat Boyd in two highly tactical matches to take the Bronze.

Under 16 Boys Scratch

In a fast 40 lap race where every break was chased down ruthlessly - most of them by last week's Under 16 Omnium champion Maxgear RT's Chris Lawless - the field was still together in the closing stages and a bunch sprint looked the likely outcome as the favourites kept control of the race.

Luc Hall of Kuota-Spinergy-GSG, Tristan Robbins of Cardiff JIF and Ryan Watmough of Shephers Cycles all had late attempts to get away, but when the bell went it was Aire Valley's Oliver Wood - runner up to Lawless in the Indivdiual Pursuit - who took the lead and Lawless, once again, who led the charge. He closed the gap relentlessly, but he couldn't quite get on terms with Wood who held on to take the Gold. Jack Hoyle of Team Terminator won the bunch sprint behind second placed Lawless to take the Bronze.
