Road To 2012 is a three year series of features, following the British Cycling Track Team on their way to the London Olympic Games. From explaining the qualification process, to selection for the team and coverage of major events, British Cycling will document the entire process, with reaction from the Olympic Coaches and the riders themselves. Included in every modern Olympic schedule, London 2012 will host five track cycling in a stunning new velodrome.

Ben Swift has had an incredible 2011 on the road completing his first Tour de France and winning a total of five stages in Romandie, Tour Down Under, Castilla y Leon and California. When Victoria Pendleton stormed to victory in the team sprint, with her partner Jess Varnish, during last week’s National Track Championships, she was effectively saying goodbye to an event and venue she has graced for a decade. Many expect the pair to compete together in the team sprint at next year’s home Olympics, but the signs are that London 2012 will be Victoria’s final bow as a sprinter, at least.

OLYMPIC VELODROME LAUNCH

Cyclists from the Great Britain Cycling Team including Sir Chris Hoy, Victoria Pendleton and Jason Kenny, took to the track in the London 2012 Velodrome for the first time as the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) unveiled the first Olympic Park venue to finish construction, on time and to budget.

The third round of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Beijing saw a young men's endurance Olympic Academy team go faster than any other British academy team on their way to a Bronze medal in the Team Pursuit. Their time (4.05.010) may have been even faster had it not been for a messy 'catch' at the end but for Chris Newton, it was a triumphant beginning to his career as a coach.

The Welsh eighteen year old was a winner of a Silver medal in the Junior Omnium at the Track Cycling World Championships in 2010 (Italy) and followed that up with a Gold medal in his first Track Cycling World Cup (Beijing). British Cycling talks to him, his coach Chris Newton and also his Academy teammates Mark Christian and Erick Rowsell.

The third round of the 2011 UCI Track Cycling World Cup took the British riders to the 2008 Olympic velodrome where a young, mostly Olympic Academy based  team, were chasing Olympic qualification points. Despite the riders ages and for many, it being their first Track Cycling World Cup, they team did very well with a Gold medal for Sam Harrison, bronze medals for the Men's Team Pursuit and Becky James as well as a fine fourth place for Peter Mitchell in the Sprint.

The third step in the qualification process, and the second round of the 2010/11 UCI Track Cycling World Cup took place in Cali (Columbia) where a strong British team competed. Victoria Pendleton was the star of the event with two Gold medals but there were a load of other medals for the team right across the three days.

The first UCI Track Cycling World Cup of the 2010/11 season and the Olympic qualification process, saw the British team from the European Championships travel down under where they were successful in keeping up the momentum in the qualifying process for the 2012 Olympics. Medals of all colours were won by the riders in the team with Sir Chris Hoy leading from the front.
