Coaching is at the heart of cycling performance at every level from teaching basic bike handling skills in a school or club, through to training athletes for the Olympic Games or the UCI pro circuit. The coaching courses available from Scottish Cycling will allow you to achieve your coaching goals; coaching at the level and in the discipline you want. We offer direct routes to becoming a UKCC qualified coach specialising in track cycling, road or time trial and in the mountain bike disciplines of XC, DH and 4X. A BMX coach education course is also available but is not currently timetabled in Scotland, if you represent a club looking to specialise in BMX we may be able to schedule a course in the future if demand dictates.

The pathway to becoming a cycle coach can be started at either UKCC level 1 or UKCC level 2 with the various disciplines being catered for as bolt ons to the ‘core' level 2. These are called DSUs or discipline specific units.

Not all cycle coaches will wish to specialise in a specific discipline and the pathway for them need not stop at completing their UKCC award. A coach's journey towards coaching excellence can continue at all levels with constant self reflection and we aim to assist this process by offering opportunities for all coaches to work alongside fellow coaches or share in continued professional development opportunities.

Coaching riders on an individual basis is covered in the level 3 coaching awards, these awards are all discipline specific so for example a coach wishing to coach an athlete in one to one sessions on the track must first become a UKCC level 2 track coach.
