Scottish Cycling Coaching Scholarship Scheme

Introduction

As a sport committed to delivering UKCC courses through the SQA, Scottish Cycling is lucky enough to receive limited financial assistance from sportscotland, this allows the part funding of our club’s coaches to undertake the UKCC level 2 award (L2 ‘core’ award) and the level 3 award.

Scottish Cycling's priorities are to support the delivery of coaching in the following areas:

  • Coaches working with young people (under 18s). This would normally be expected to be within the context of Go-Ride registered or accredited clubs.

Scottish Cycling is also keen to support coaches from groups that are currently under-represented in cycle-coaching, in particular women and young people (under 23) and coaches with a disability.

Our funding is paid back to coaches via our scholarship scheme following completion of the first phase of training (days 1&2). A percentage of the course costs will be reimbursed in return for a coach’s commitment to delivering an average of one coaching session per week and the club’s on-going commitment to deliver the British Cycling Go-Ride Programme.

Funding can only be provided against the following Scottish based courses:

  • UKCC Level 2
  • UKCC Level 3

Funding for UKCC level 1 courses will be managed by sportscotland for full details of this process please contact Scottish Cycling’s Coach Education team.

The exact degree of funding will be determined following submission of a completed scholarship application form providing candidates meet certain criteria. The maximum amount we can reimburse is 50% of the course fee for level 2 and up to 75% of the course fee for level 3. In return for this funding we require coaches to commit to deliver at least one session per week within a Go-Ride Club.

Members of SC clubs that have not started the process of becoming Go-Ride Clubs will still be able to access funding but with a 10%reduction in the amount payable.

Level 1 coaches may be entitled to up to 50% of the cost of their course direct from sportscotland. Applications made by our members for this sportscotland funding would be supported and assisted by Scottish Cycling.

Scottish Cycling operates this scheme to assist coaches coming into the sport that will play an active role in developing a brighter future for cycling in Scotland. To be eligible:

  • Coaches must commit to delivering specific coaching programmes within Scottish Cycling affiliated clubs
  • Coaches must be resident within Scotland
  • Coaches must hold current British Cycling membership

NB. Additional funding for Level 2, Level 2 DSU and Level 3 courses may be available from your local authority, even if you coach out with a Scottish Cycling affiliated club.
