Winner of the series this year was Graham Barclay riding for Team Leslie Bike Shop/Right Move Windows from his Leslie Bike Shop team-mate Jim Meek after the pair overtook long time leader Billy Bunyan Dunfermline Cycling Club after the last event.

Due to falling numbers at Fife CA Wednesday evening time trials a few years ago, the Fife CA asked George Black and Raymond Reidy to find a solution and increase the number of participants in these events. The Midweek time trials in Fife have been running for years as a means of introducing young riders to competitive cycling while providing training races for seniors. There had been a lack of support for these time trials and George and Raymond put proposals to the Fife CA for a series encouraging participation. The points system has changed almost every year since the inception however it has remained with participation the key. With a high number of Veterans competing in time trials there is also a Veteran's on Standard competition run within the series.

This year the series consisted of 24 events, riders score 60 points for a win down to 1 for 60th place with each riders best 12 scores are multiplied by the number of events finished up to a maximum of 21. This may seem complicated however an excel spreadsheet make it simple.

It may also appear unfair however the first point in the series rules is that it is run to increase participation in the events.

The series started on the 31st March with a 5 mile tt, this was won by last years series winner Steve Nutley, Fife Cycling 2000. Steve also won the next two events, another 5 and a 10 ml tt. Round 4 was won by Matthew Hamilton, Team Leslie Bike Shop/Right Move Windows and visitor Keith Johnston took the series lead after Steve Nutley missed this event.

Three of the first four rounds were oversubscribed on the 45 rider limit, starting so early in the season brings problems with the dark nights drawing in early, even with a 6.45 start for the first 3 rounds.

Winners over the next rounds were Matthew Hamilton, Silas Goldsworthy, Sandy Wallace Cycles, and Steve Nutley, Keith Johnston retained his lead up to this point. Round 7 was a 2up 10ml tt and this was won by Team Leslie Bike Shop/Right Move Windows pairing of Matthew Hamilton and Raymond Reidy.

The annual Loch Leven Circuit 13 mile hilly tt was round 8 of the series and up for grabs to the fastest FCA rider was the Thomas Hamilton Shield, Matthew Hamilton duly obliged to win this round with Jim Meek taking over the series lead from Billy Bunyan and Alan Solway, Kennoway Road Club. Just behind this trio was Brian Christie, Team Leslie Bike Shop/Right Move Windows, who had been in 4th or 5th position from round 4.

The next four events were standard 10 mile and 25 mile tt's. Steve Nutley winning all 4 rounds and had a good try out on the course to be used for the Scottish 25 mile championship a couple of weeks later. After round 11 Billy Bunyan took the lead from the absent Jim Meek with Steve Nutley moving back up the third place. Round 11 was the newly formed Kinross Cycling Club's first time at organising and they added a bit of glamour by having a large digital clock at the start and Kinross Camera Club out at every corner snapping away.

Round 13 was a hilly 10 mile tt for the Fife Century Road Club Scott Trophy. Junior Matthew Hamilton added another win to his collection while his Scottish junior team-mates Tom Arnstein, Velo Eccose, and Stuart McCluskie, VC Glasgow South, went off course with Stuart calling from Cowdenbeath police station for help.

Richard Hunter, Perth United CC, won the 10ml tt of round 14. Billy Bunyan retained the series lead with Jim Meek moving into 2nd place and Alan Solway 3rd. Graham Barclay moved into the top 10 for the first time after he had missed the first 2 rounds. Matthew Hamilton won round 15 another 25ml tt and series leader Billy Bunyan took round 16 from Meek and Barclay. The top three remained the same over these rounds and another rider lurking just outside the top places was Scott Patterson, Sandy Wallace Cycles in 5th at this point.

(C League Winner Scott Patterson Sandy Wallace Cycles)

Fife Cycling 2000's Steve Nutley and Paul Gallagher won round 17, 18 and 19 a hilly 10 and two standard 10ml tt's. Top three overall remained unchanged however Graham Barclay was now up into 4th place.
With daylight starting to fade the series reverted back to the shorter events and the first of two 5ml tt's, Steve Nutley won again and Paul Gallagher won the following week. At this point a few riders had reached their maximum 21 events and would only increase their total should they be placed higher than their 12th best previous position.

By now we were well into the middle of August and the holiday period, Billy Bunyan and Jim Meek missed the 2 hill climbs in the series, both these were won by Gordon McBride, Sandy Wallace Cycles.

Going into the final event the top five were leading Billy Bunyan, then Graham Barclay, Jim Meek, Alan Solway and Brian Christie, however Barclay and Meek had only rode 20 events. The last race of the midweeks for years has been the Kirkcaldy and District CC's mile sprint, along the generally flat Strathore road at Thornton and heading eastwards. Unfortunately the prevailing westerly was not to be and riders face a head wind from start to finish. Paul Gallagher took his 3rd win of the series however both Graham Barclay and Jim Meek overtook Billy Bunyan for a Team Leslie Bike Shop/Right Move Windows one-two.

To give competition to as many riders as possible the series is split into four leagues and prizes are awarded to the top 5 in each league, the winners of each league were:

A League Graham Barclay, Team Leslie Bike Shop/Right Move Windows
B League Billy Bunyan Dunfermline Cycling Club
C League Scott Patterson Sandy Wallace Cycles
D League Anda-jay Burgess Sandy Wallace Cycles

Alan Solway and Brian Christie were the only two riders to ride every round from 144 who rode the series.

The Veterans series was also a close run competition with 60 year old Alan Solway coming out winner over Graham Barclay, 53 and Billy Bunyan, 55.

(Veterans winner & 4th overall Alan Solway Kennoway Road Club)

The series runs smoothly due to the efforts of many people, with most clubs in the FCA taking their turn to organise, officiate and marshal the events. A special mention goes to Mhairi Laffoley, Mhairi ran the signing on at most events, and prepared the results soon after each event. Also to Bill Suttie and Hamish Dempsey who helped out at most events.

Plans are already underway for next year's series and although small changes will be made, the entry on the line will remain, as this suits both organisers and riders alike, however oversubscription is always a possibility.
