Manx rider Tom Black (Cycle Premier-Kovert) won Rhyl Cycling Club's Maurice's Road Race on Sunday at Denbigh in a game of cat and mouse with the main bunch and a highly experienced chasing group in the latter stages.

Black, a 22 year old postal worker with two wins to his credit this season, broke clear with 20 miles of 64 to go in the company of Dan Evans (Rhos-On-Sea CC), Giles Drake (Team Elite-Paul Bethell) and Jimmy Froggatt (Wills Wheels CC).

At Llandyrnog, with six miles to go on the final nine mile lap, Froggatt cracked on the drag and faded to finish seventh, leaving the trio to their fate.

Despite a group containing former GB international Mark Lovatt (Planet X) and former Merseyside champion Dave Williams (Kuota-Spinergy-GSG) making inroads into their lead, at the line in Colomendy Industrial Estate it was Black a clear winner in 2:32:39 from Drake and Evans, with Lovatt and Williams renewing old rivalries in fourth and fifth 20 seconds behind. Stephen Smith (Vita Cycle Team) took the bunch sprint for ninth 50 seconds in arrears.
