Jock Wadley Memorial Road Race

Story posted March 14, 2010; by Mark Cozens

Jon Tiernan-Locke (below) made it two wins out of two for the Rapha Condor Sharp pro team in the Jock Wadley Memorial Road Race on Sunday. Locke soloed in to win the race ahead of Dan Staite who had been very active the day before at the Roy Thame Cup road race and former winner Andy Lyons.

The Race

Fine but very windy conditions greeted the riders as they embarked on their race around the reservoir that the event crossed twelve times during the 84 miles. After a small break had been instigated by Will Fox (Team Zappi’s) and Grant Bayton (Willier/Bigmaggys.com/Prendas), two more riders drifted off the front to join them, Andy Lyons (Orbea/For Goodness Shakes) and Corley Cycles rider  Ashley Cox.

These four dominated the early laps before Dan Staite (Cycles Dauphine) attacked to get across. Staite, who had been in a long break the day before in the Roy Thame Cup, was joined by eventual winner, Locke, who sat on the Cycles Dauphine rider until they joined the four leaders.

These six then continued to draw away from the rest until the Rapha team decided to have some fun with the others in the peloton. With four laps remaining, Rapha assembled at the front and upped the pace and soon the peloton was in pieces and the gap to the leaders was tumbling.

The chasers though never finished the job off despite getting the lead down to only 40 seconds and the pace of what was left of the peloton stabilised. The riders in the break though were not working well together and with two laps to go of the seven mile circuit, Locke decided it was time to go it alone.

Only the day before, his manager John Herety had been heaping praise on his new signing and Locke didn’t disappoint him over those final two laps, crossing the finish line well clear of the break where Dan Staite won the sprint for second.
