New Year will see work begin on a new cycling and walking bridge over the River Swale in North Yorkshire, allowing pedestrians and cyclists to avoid the busy Catterick Bridge.
Thanks to lottery funding the new crossing, which will renovate the old iron bridge, will link Brompton with Colburn and Catterick itself.
Speaking to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Brompton-on-Swale Parish Council chairman Andrew Guest said: ‘We are absolutely delighted that these improvements are going ahead. It was back in 2004 that the council first highlighted this dangerous crossing and what could be done to improve safety.”
Sustrans’ director in Yorkshire, David Hall, added: “The new river crossing will overcome a major barrier to walking and cycling in the area. It will improve connections to the local cycle network and transform the appeal of human powered daily journeys for many people.”
As with many National Cycle Network projects the new route will incorporate art installations – Brompton-on-Swale Parish Council will install three portraits on the route, depicting key people associated with the river, the railway and the bridge.
