Two new cycle centric programmes on the Beeb
Posted: 27th July 2010 | Eddie Allen
Tour de France season always brings around a spate of cycling related programming and this year is no exception, with the BBC airing two programmes aimed squarely at the recreational cyclist.
'Ride of my life: The story of the bicycle' airs at 9pm on 27th July on BBC Four and is based on Rob Penn's book 'It's All About the Bike' which charts Penn's quest for the ultimate bike and at the same time, ratherly cleverly, tells the story of the bicycle's history in a way that your run-of-the-mill cycling history book could never do.
The second programme also airs on BBC Four and similarly is broadcast as a companion piece to a book, written by Jane Eastoe. 'Britain by Bike' is presented by Clare Balding and reinvigorates Harold Briercliffe's classic touring guides from the 1940s. At the time of writing, we've just had episode one, where Clare follows Briercliffe's wheel-tracks on a 20 mile coastal ride in North Devon. You can catch it on iplayer here.
