Entries Wanted: Nutcracker Series

Updated, Friday 10 Sept - the event will now go ahead following a surge of entries during the week, but as ever, the more the merrier - Full Details

With 1 week to go until the penultimate race in the Nutcracker XC MTB Series, organisers Bikelicker Events are threatening cancelation if entries do not increase by Tuesday. "We've got 11 pre-entries and 9 series entries so far, giving us a total of 20 riders. We need a minimum of 75 riders to make the event financially viable - and that's running on significantly reduced costs too!" commented Series Director James Hall this morning. "I'm conscious that some date clashes have arisen with the forthcoming Yorkshire Points Cyclocross season - and that the YCCA have also jumped in to use Camp Hill as a race venue the following week, but with significant venue fees and the cost of on-site paramedics, we simply cannot afford to run the event with anything less than 75 riders!" he went on to say.

The event will remain open for entries until Thursday evening. Organisers are calling for those intending to pre-enter to do so as soon as possible. Entries available via the Nutcracker website.

Final Details Endura Sleepless in the Saddle
7th & 8th August 2009, Catton Park, Walton-On-Trent

Endura Sleepless in the Saddle returns to Catton Park, this weekend, for what we hope will be the best ever weekend of 24 hour racing. Event organisers Pro Velo Support & Endura have been working hard to develop & improve this already amazing weekend of mountain biking. The now classic 24 hour circuit, conveniently located in the heart of the Midlands, has been further refined and tweak, to make it better than ever.

As in the last two years of Sleepless in the Saddle, Endura will be offering riders a special deal. For this years rendition, Endura are offering riders our brand new, recession busting weather based Scrappage Scheme.

If the sun should shine - trade in your old knackered pair of sunglasses for a pair of spanking new light reactive performance Endura glasses at half price. Double glazing for your minces, keeping unwanted photons, mud and other flying objects out of your eyes, helping you ride round stuff that you'd ride into without them.

When it inevitably rains - trade in your old battered and bruised baggies for a brand new half price pair of MT500 Spray Baggy Shorts, so good that they won a 2009 Eurobike Award.

See them as the mutant offspring of a pair of waterproof trousers and a pair of high performance trail riding baggy shorts. Putting the Endura into Endurance riding.

This offer will be on a first come, first served basis and is open to holders of a Endura Sleepless in the Saddle 2010 number board and is limited to one pair of shorts OR one pair of glasses per rider. Come and see Endura in the main arena from Friday evening onwards and look out for us when we're out racing alongside you during the event.

CANCELLED: 2010 Black Mountains 3 Day

Posted June 29 2010

From the event organisers direct:

It is with regret that due to our minimum number of riders not being reached we have decided that the best course of action is to postpone the event until 3/4/5 June 2011.

Since we started organising this event we have had nothing but exceptional support from both riders, the cycling industry and in particularly our sponsors - which we are grateful for.

We have taken onboard all comments that have been passed onto us and feel that this event still deserves a place in the mountain bike calendar but do not want to compromise the experience we are trying to offer by running it with a depleted field of riders.

We would now welcome all that can to support this event by entering early, volunteering, buying the event t shirt and spreading the word.

As always we welcome any further comments but the 2011 event will have additional options including 2 and 3 day packages, group discounts and various camping options - all of which will hopefully encourage a wider range of rider interest.

We apologise sincerely if this has caused any inconvenience but trust us when we say that all avenues have been exhausted and we are out of ideas and time!

All riders and companions will be refunded fully into the account supplied to Bearded Man when registering - so please keep your eye on your bank accounts and let us know if there is a problem.

Please keep your eyes on the Beardedman.co.uk website as we intend to get other ventures on the go whilst we drum up support for our first event.

In addition to the professional mechanics available to work on your bike for free, Weldtite will also be making their extensive tool range available for those who like to fettle with their own machines in the Weldtite Work Zone.

Brownbacks Racing Profits Local Charities

May 17 2010

Following the resounding success of the 2009 races which saw over 200 individual riders compete in each of the two series, the cash surplus has been presented on behalf of the team, volunteers and riders. £750 has been donated to Rossendale and Pendle Mountain Rescue Team who cover Lee Quarry and the surrounding area, and £250 to Derian House Children's Hospice.

True to their aim, the Brownbacks wanted to donate this to causes close to their hearts and to show that the events at Lee Quarry are aiming to contribute to the wider community. Chris Smith said "This was no mean feat considering we set the 2009 series up from scratch early in 2009, aiming to offer the lowest cost racing around. Donating any surplus cash to good causes has always been a key aim and helps to make all the hard work worthwhile."

Big thanks must go to the 2009 sponsors many of who have returned for 2010. The series operates with the generous support of Lancashire CC who own and operate Lee Quarry and with the patience and tolerance of the people who live next to the quarry entrance. As usual the team need lots of volunteers on race day for everything from sign-on, to marshalling to timekeeping. If you are interested get in contact via the website.

Prime MTB Race and Training Venue Under Threat - posted 23rd March 2010

The recently announced HS2 High Speed Rail Route from London to Birmingham threatens to destroy part of Lotts Wood, a Forestry Commission Site in the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The site is rented by Wycombe Summit MTB Club for racing and training, and the club prides itself in its Go-Ride training for youngsters. The proposed rail route will see a large cutting routed through the wood, accommodating 250mph trains.

Southerndownhill Announces 2010 Race Team - posted March 17th

After a couple of years away, Southerndownhill is proud to be back on track with its 2010 race team. UK downhill racing is the foundation of Southerndownhill so it is only right and fitting that for 2010 Southerndownhill will be out and about with full effect to rip up the trails and race to the finish with a big grin.

Team Lineup

  • Chris Astle - After missing out a place in Expert last year by a silly small amount Chris won't stop until he gets to that milestone this year with his shoulder in or out.
  • Neil Cousins - No one knows as much about suspension as this man. TF's workshop manager gets back between the tape for some proper racing.
  • Rob Lewis (Team Manager) - It's time for Rob to get off the key board and get to more races. Southerndownhill is about riding bikes and that's exactly what he plans on doing.
  • Ryan Telling - While Ryan hasn't been racing for the past few years he has still been pushing his bike skills. Back with racing this year Ryan hopes to lay down some good times both in the UK and over the pond later this season.
  • Tom Whant - After breaking his wrist mid season, then breaking it again(!), Tom still came away with some impressive results in '09. With the bones on the mend, Tom's aim is to fill a solid season and move into expert for 2011.

7stanes chips in to boost local cycling

14th December 2009 | Source: Forestry Commission

The 7stanes mountain bike project has donated £4,000 to the Dumfries based Stepping Stanes voluntary youth cycling club so that they can buy microchip race-timing equipment for events.

The cash boost was awarded to help the club encourage more mountain bikers, especially younger riders, to take part in race events throughout the region.

The equipment was used for the first time at "The Christmas Cracker" event on Saturday 12th December. The event was aimed at younger riders and was held in Heathhall Forest, managed by Forestry Commission Scotland.

7stanes project manager Colin Williamson said:

"We're very pleased to be in a position to help out local mountain bikers in the Dumfries area. We are very keen to widen the sport out to new people and attract youngsters to take part, whether it's for racing or just for fun."

The electronic chip system uses similar technology used in security tags placed on items in shops and supermarkets. Each competitor has a unique number linked to a microchip and this records times at the start and finish line.

Duncan Maycroft from Stepping Stanes added:

"We chose to purchase the chip timing system in order to enable both local young riders, clubs and groups in the wider south of Scotland region to experience what it is like to have a professional timing system present at club level races.

"We felt that it would encourage new riders and hopefully increase club membership, as well as produce and income stream in the future as the system is very portable and we will be able to hire it out to other clubs and interested groups.

"We have received a huge amount of support from 7Stanes both in purchasing the equipment and on-going collaboration in the setting up of Heathhall forest trails."

The total cost of the equipment is put at £14,500. The balance of the funding was provided by the Scottish Government for the GoSmart Dumfries Project which is being taken forward by Swestrans, Dumfries and Galloway Council and the Holywood Trust.

Anyone looking to find out more about Stepping Stanes or hire the equipment can contact the club at www.steppingstanes.co.uk .

Peat Signs for Muc Off - 13th November 2009: Since winning the world DH title in September Steve Peat and the Syndicate's stock has risen yet further. Along with 3-time UCI World Cup winner Greg Minnaar, and super-fast Junior World champion Josh Bryceland, these guys are the must haves for any media conscious sponsor in mountain biking.

This fact has not escaped the notice of Muc-Off owner Alex Trimnell. ‘Peaty' and the rest of the Syndicate have signed to Muc-Off for 2010 to endorse all cleaning products, lubes and brushes from both the rider and bike care ranges. The deal re-unites Peat and the Poole-based cleaning experts, after they backed him in his younger years, and associates Muc-Off with world-leading DH brands Santa Cruz Bicycles and SRAM.

Speaking about the deal Trimnell said:

"It has always been our philosophy at Muc-Off to back the best riders. The brand new Syndicate deal rekindles our association with Steve Peat. He is now seen as the ambassador of downhill mountain biking, and he knows his product inside-out. For Steve and his Syndicate to be using Muc-Off products in 2010 is a great partnership for us. We are really excited about this deal and know that our continued approach to product development will be further enhanced by the experience, and demand for great product, that the Syndicate guys will bring."
