RACE REPORT

Liam Killeen(Giant Factory Racing) rode to an emphatic victory on Saturday in the final round of the British Mountain bike Series held at Newnham Park. The current National Champion made light work of the challenging Plymouth course recognised by many as one of the best in the country offering technical descents, sharp climbs and the famous water splash. The overall title was already wrapped up in round four by Endura's injured star Oli Beckingsale who only had to turn up at Newnham to collect his medal.

The usual frantic dash from the gun saw a handful of riders wiped out as the course narrowed going into the lower part of the wooded area - riders unable to continue with damaged bikes seeing their chance of final places disappear in front of their eyes. Keeping clear of the carnage was Killeen and Team Wiggle's Lee Williams who made their intentions known from the outset pulling a useful lead on Sebastian Batchelor and Steve James(Hargroves Cycles). These two would have their own head to head battle throughout the race.

Williams had the better of Killeen on the opening lap holding the Team Giant rider at arm's length all be it by only a few seconds. However, by the end of the lap Killeen had the measure of his rival and the two completed the first circuit level pegging. The National Champion upped a gear on the second lap and started to pull away from Williams, a lead he would increase lap on lap. Although Killeen's face was showing the effort on the big climb in the closing laps, the Malvern based rider looked fairly comfortable in the saddle.

Williams was stuck in no-man's-land for the majority of the race unable to find the legs to bridge the gap to Killeen but strong enough to keep Batchelor and James at bay - these two chasers could not loose each other and their race was enthralling - they started each circuit within a second of each other.

With the end of the race approaching Killeen found more in the legs putting in a 19.07 lap time to further increase the gap over Williams rolling across the line 2.46 ahead of the Wiggle rider. Third spot went to Batchelor who managed to escape from James on the closing lap.

Liam Killeen spoke to us after the race: "It was a late decision to come to this one, the last few races didn't really go to plan but this is a really nice way to finish off the season. Having Oli (Beckinsale) out with his injury was a pain, I would have liked to see him race today and not be a spectator but I'm pleased for him winning the overall. I'm glad things went well today. I tried to ride smoothly, it's never easy to ride Plymouth, they always make a good course so it was nice to bag a win. Lee (Williams) was strong early on, I followed him on the first lap and he showed me a few sneaky lines but it was man against man on the last few laps. I'm ready for a break now but I'll probably jump on a cross bike towards the back end of the season."

Annie Last (Boardman Elite) showed the rest of the Elite Women's race why she is the National Champion riding to a fine victory in the first race of the day. The Under-23 rider, although unable to win the overall 2011 series having missed too many events, nonetheless gave a masterclass of riding on the Newnham Park circuit, finishing over four minutes ahead of second place and overall winner Melanie Spath (Cycleways).

The technical course was no obstacle to Last and with no one able to hold her wheel she was able to ease up on the closing laps and almost sight-see on the way round! The race for second place was a little tighter between Spath and Lee Craigie (Torq Performance) who were in sight of each other on the opening laps but with the overall title in Spath's grasp the Cycleways rider made sure the second place on the day would be hers.

After the race Annie Last said: "I really enjoyed racing here today. I enjoy the course and like racing here. It's my kind of course, it's got a few hills in it, a few technical descents which are fun to ride - it's the kind of course you have to think about riding, on the pedals, off the pedals. Since the worlds I've taken a bit of time to chill out but I wanted to come here and race the final round. I'm abroad racing for the next couple of weeks then I'm taking a break after that and then it will be back training ready for next year."

In the Expert women's category, Laura Massey had too much pace for all the other riders, pulling clear of eventual runner-up Stephania Magri virtually from the start. In the Expert men's race James Williams finished only just over a minute clear of Ben Price, just edging a few seconds further ahead each lap in a close battle.

The Junior races saw relatively straightforward wins for Grant Ferguson and Katy Winton, with Calum Magowan and Ffion James similarly dominant in the Juvenile races.

In the Masters' categories, Caroline Goward beat Verity Appleyard by almost 3 minutes, whilst Matt Dennis was over a minute and a half clear of Ed Moseley, having led the race from start to finish.

The Veterans' races were equally clear-cut, with both Nicky Hughes and Paul Hopkins breaking the elastic to the other competitors on their opening laps and going on to record convincing wins.

The Male Youth class produced one of the closest races of the day: Harry Franklin led by 3 seconds from Iain Paton and Mike Thompson. But Franklin faded after that and it was left to Paton and Thompson to battle for the win, a contest that almost went right to to the line, with Paton easing clear in the closing few minutes to win by 11 seconds. Lucy Grant had an easier time of it, winnin the Female Youth race y over a minute from Isla Short.

British Cycling would like to thank the organising team, officials and everyone else who helped promote this event. Our sport could not exist without the hundreds of people, many of them unpaid volunteers, who put in many hours of hard work running events, activities and clubs.
