British Cycling Anti-Doping Home Page

Doping is the administration of a prohibited substance and/or method to enhance performance or recovery. It undermines the integrity of sport, the ethos of competition and potentially would allow science to determine sporting results. It can adversely affect the health and well-being of riders.

For these reasons many countries, including the UK, supported the creation of the World Anti-Doping Agency which had developed a set of codes for which all sports must now comply.

British Cycling has been at the forefront of developing a strong anti-doping culture within competitive cycling over the past decade.

All members of British Cycling who participate in competitive cycling are subject to anti-doping testing both in and out of competition.

LATEST NEWS

Changes to the Prohibited List for 2012.

WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) has published the 2012 Prohibited List which will come into effect from the 1st January 2012.

The key change is that formoterol has been added as an exception to category S3. Beta-2 Agonists. When taken by inhalation formoterol now has a threshold level of permitted use (maximum 36 micrograms over 24 hours). A TUE is still required for terbutline.

UK Anti-Doping reminds athletes that the British guidelines for inhaled formoterol range from 24 – 72 micrograms per day. Should there be a medical situation requiring doses beyond 36 micrograms then a TUE may be required.

Riders whose daily formoterol dosage is above 36 mg per day are required to complete a lung function test and apply for an asthma TUE. If exacerbation of asthma requires a supplementary dosage of formoterol, above 36mg per 24 hours, an emergency TUE should be applied for.

Only riders on the National Registered Testing Pool or on a funded UK Sport programme (Podium, Academy, and Olympic Development) are required to apply in advance for a TUE prior to taking medication. Other riders have 10 days following the provision of a sample to a Doping Control Officer to apply for a TUE.

A further change to the Prohibited List is that felypressin has been added as an exception to S5. Diuretics and other Masking Agents.

Clarification has also been given with regard to glycerol which is prohibited as a plasma expander which must be ingested in quantities far beyond that which are commonly found in foodstuffs and toiletries for a rider to return an ‘Adverse Analytical Finding’.

UK Anti Doping is communicating these changes directly to National Registered Testing Pool athletes.

The 2012 Prohibited List can be found on UK Anti-Doping website. Should you have any questions about the changes please contact Amy Dyer at amy.dyer@ukad.org.uk or on 020 7766 7350.
