Location: St Paul's Primary School, Tameside
Event: 10 November 2012

Young cyclists from Tameside and further afield took part in a skills competition as well as a sprint and endurance Cyclo-Cross race at St Paul’s Catholic Primary School, which was the venue for some recent coaching, provided by the Go-Ride Programme.

The score riders received during the skills round was combined with their race positions to decide overall positions.

St Paul’s pupil Abigail Matley kicked off proceedings scoring lowest on the skills round in the under 8’s competition. However, as the mass start racing proceeded, Mckenzie Lee soon became a crowd favourite, taking advantage of the muddy conditions to run ahead of the field during the sprint race. Over the longer distance, Alice Ockwell took advantage when Lee was held up at the first corner, proving running wasn’t required, despite the slippery conditions. Consistent riding by club rider Ethan Grimshaw earned him third place overall behind Ockwell and Lee who took silver and gold.

The under 10’s competition was wide open after the skills competition, with many riders scoring well over the course. During the first mass start race, six weeks of schools coaching looked to have paid off for St Paul’s pupils with Jack Oldham and Declan Kelly taking first and second respectively, with Dowson Go-Ride Schools club rider Sam Pottage securing third. Oldham then dominated again in the endurance race. Evie Black had an impressive ride, coming back from a crash in the first race to take second place ahead of Pottage whose consistency earned him third place overall with Kelly second and Oldham first.

Mossley CRT rider Cameron Bates was the only rider to clear the skills round out of the under 12’s group and backed that up with two wins in the mass start events ahead of the Eastland’s Velo rider and St Paul’s pupil Kieran Stafford who took third place overall.

Thanks must go to all the volunteers who gave up their time to make the race possible as well as St Paul’s for hosting the event.
