Alex’s cycling career began when his dad took him to watch a race when he was 13. The racing caught Alex’s interest and a week later he took part in his first 10 mile Time Trial where he recorded a time of 28 minutes and 1 second.
Alex’s natural talent was recognised and he was accepted on to British Cycling’s Talent Team for the 2004/05 season. He progressed through the ranks of Olympic Development Programme in 2006 and onto the Olympic Academy Programme in 2007, winning countless Junior Road and Time Trial races along the way.
Alex joined Lance Armstrong’s Trek-Livestrong Under-23 Team for the 2010 season which saw him win the Chrono des Nations espoir category as well as clinching podium positions in the Tour of Utah and Cascade Cycling Classic. Alex also enjoyed success representing Great Britain where he was crowned U23 European Champion in the Time Trial, and at the Commonwealth Games where he represented England in the same event, winning the Silver medal.
Alex signed as a neo-pro with Team Sky for the 2011 season and recorded some good results for the team including several podium finishes and the British National Time Trial Champion jersey. His season culminated with his first World Tour race, the Tour of Beijing, in which he took third in the opening Time Trial which meant he was awarded with the Young Rider’s jersey for the second stage.
