About Jamie:
As the fastest man ever around the Velodrome from a standing start, it was actually on the BMX track where Jamie first began his cycling career. The early ‘90s saw Jamie win numerous British and European titles before moving to California to earn his living as a BMX pro. With a World Champion title to his name, Jamie decided he wanted an Olympic medal to add to the collection and so in 2001 – before BMX became an Olympic discipline – he switched to track cycling.
Jamie’s explosive BMX power and speed transferred seamlessly onto the Velodrome boards and he was selected for the GB team after just a few sessions. A year after he took up track cycling he was a member of the GB Team Sprint trio that won Gold in the World Championships in 2002, and since then Jamie has picked up medals across numerous Sprint disciplines, including a World Keirin title in 2004.
The Team Sprint is probably the discipline Jamie is best known for, and also the discipline where he finally realised his Olympic dream of a Gold medal in Beijing 2008. Jamie rode a blistering first lap which set team-mates Chris Hoy and Jason Kenny on the way to victory. Jamie put in the fastest opening lap time ever on the way, and earned himself a place in the 2009 New Year’s Honours List.
