Mike Teunissen made it three wins from three races for the Dutch in the Under-23 Men’s race as the World Cyclo-Cross championships took on a distinctly orange hue with only the elite men’s race to come.

A much closer race than either of the preceding pair, this was much more of a war of attrition, completely dominated by the Dutch and Belgians, who grabbed all the top ten placings.

Teunissen was in fact the early leader, but soon gave over the head of the race to Weitse Bosmans of Belgium who then set out to build a lead with dogged determination. Bosmans led for several laps, on several occasions looking set to move clear, but in the end he was dragged back by Teunissen with 2 laps to go.

Bosmans looked to have the advantage on a couple of technical sections of the course. However, knowing that his team-mate Wout Van Aert was closing behind them he tried to slow the pace as the leading duo took the bell.

Teunissen realised this was an opportunity to attack and gave it everything in the first half of that last lap. Bosmans was initially able to limit the Dutchman’s gains to a couple of seconds, but eventually he simply couldn’t keep the gap under control and his technical superiority counted for nothing as Teunissen rode clear to claim the win.

Bosmans looked a tired man as he crossed the line to claim second with Van Aert, who had hung tantalisingly close to the front of the race for several laps without making contact, claiming third. The top three were well clear of the rest at the finish.
