Report:Gosforth RC Cyclo-Cross CXNE League Rd 6

Event: 14th November 2010, Gateshead Stadium

Posted: 17th Novmeber 2010 | Report: Deryk Nolan

This was Gosforth RC's first Cyclo-cross event at Gateshead International Stadium (GIS). With the recent rainfall leading up to the event organisers wanted to make a wide course with a good mix of technical and recovery sections, which the grounds at GIS lentd itself to very well. Just to make things interesting and to keep the riders focused, organisers chucked in three wild horses to run around the course, purely to keep riders on their toes!

Prayers for dry weather a couple of days before the event paid off with the added bonus of a bit wind to help dry the course a little. Considering the National Trophy was also taking place the field was large with around 100 competitors taking part; 20 in the U12; nine in the Youth and 71 in the main event.

Main Race (Snr/Jnr/Women/Vet)

The day dawned bright, sunny but a little cold - ideal racing conditions. The main race got away on time with Tony Fawsett (Black Hawk Bikes) leading the pack. Tony has been riding rather well all season, so to help the other riders, organisers had a surprise in store for him. Unfortunately Tony has been competing too long to be caught out and avoided the marker tape trap although it did catch Alan Nixon another Black Hawk rider so it wasn't all bad news. Alan quickly removed the marker tape from his back wheel (where did that strong gust of wind come from? It had been fairly calm all morning).

Undeterred Alan remounted and went through the pack before most of them realised he wasn't at the front. As the race progressed Tony Fawsett increased his lead even having time to change bikes (puncture) and swap pleasantries each lap with commentator John Davidson. Ross Creber (Endura Racing), Keith Ashbridge (Velo Club Cumbria), Darren Binks (Hambleton RC) and Paul Errington (Ayup Lights), were having a tremendous battle for 2nd and 3rd place.

Sadly Paul Errington had a mechanical on lap six leaving the others to battle it out. Ross Creber also had a problem leaving Darren Binks in 2nd place. However, Alan Nixon had come through the field and was hot on his back wheel. As the race progressed the ground conditions changed allowing the more experienced riders with the better bike handling skills to pull away from the others.

Up at the sharp end Tony Fawsett continued to stretch out his lead and came over the line way ahead of the others. The battle for second took a dramatic turn of events with Alan Nixon having made his way to 2nd had a puncture within sight of the line allowing Darren Binks to take 2nd. Keith Ashbridge went on to come in as 1st Vet and 5th overall, while William Brown (Fietsen Tempo) was the first Junior home and a commendable 19th overall. The ladies race was a little more open with Dawn Sherrin (GS Metro) well ahead of 2nd place Kendra White (PSUK gigawave). Overall there were 62 finishers from 71 starters.

In case you were wondering about the horses -  organisers managed to remove them before the racing started!

U12

Finley Robertson (Hetton Hawks) lead this from the start, while Christian Warner (Teesdale CRC) got the better of stronger riders Ben Moody (Hetton Hawks) and Augus Brown (Muddy Brown Events). Rhiana Stoves (Onelife Racing) was the 1st girl over the line.

Youth

Stephen Lee (Derwentside) was off the line fast and quickly consolidated his lead, riding much better than his age would suggest, he could even show the many seniors a clean pair of wheels. Behind Stephen there was a four-man battle for 2nd & 3rd with a Ferryhill rider and three Hetton Hawks riders.

Rider Comments

"Good event yesterday with lots of positive rider feedback. The course rode well with enough technical sections and a balance of recovery stretches."

"So many nice, friendly people and everyone was so full of praise for the course when they came to drop off their chips/numbers at the end. Lots of thankyou's to the organisers!! Everyone seemed to have a great time."

"The day went well and it was a good venue and cracking course."

"Thanks a lot for organising yesterday, a great location and it was a very good course: wide and easy to pass - it must have taken a long time to set it all out(!) so thank you very much."
