RAF's Dan Lewis Takes a Flyer in Round 2

The second round in the GWR Team Floodlit Cyclo Cross League series, held at the Supermarine Rugby Club, north of Swindon, saw Dan Lewis of the RAF take a hard fought victory.

Race organiser Dan Smith, and team mate Peter Kench prepared the course during the afternoon, Keeping most of the features of last weeks opening round. The grassy banks and fast straights on the top section, were dryer than last week and so lap times were quicker, the lead riders taking around 4 minutes per lap and the winner completing 10 laps of the circuit. Sunshine prior to darkness falling saw overhead conditions being dry for the race but with the dew settling a few corners were still slippy.

Following the first weeks success the numbers were up with 37 riders signing on for the event. From the start the pace was high but an early fall for last weeks winner Luke Cowely on the third bend allowed a gap for Peter Kench (GWR Team), Dan Lewis (RAF), and Duncan Jameson (Felt) to detach themselves form the head of the race. A the three riders set a fast pace for the first lap, but with Crispin Doyle Swindon RC), Nick Onslow (Pedal On, Dan Smith (GWR team) and Paul Lloyd (Banjo Cycles) chasing hard the gap was pegged. On lap two Crispin Doyle tried to bridge across to the leaders and by lap three was in third place where he remained for the duration of the race. Dan Lewis who had lead for the first three laps relinquished the lead to Duncan Jameson. But as the lead two riders commenced lap seven it appeared that Duncan had a problem in the woods. Dan Lewis held on for the last three laps to take a well deserved win.

Wednesday 13th October sees the third round in the seven race series, as competition hots up for the overall league prize of a free road cycling holiday in Spain, courtesy of Joy-riders (www.joy-riders.com). Race start is 7.30pm, entry fee is £10 and LED lights required.
