Paul Oldham began his winter 'Cross season with a canter in the sun at the second KUDU Kross, the opening round of the Cyclo-Cross North East 2010-11 series, held at the Yorkshire Dales National Park Centre, Hawes. The event took place in bright sunshine and riders enjoyed a fast, dry course.
Showing the growing popularity of Cyclocross 21 Under 12's signed on, racing on a short course with a mix of terrain, they were round in under 2 minutes! Resembling an off road criterium a group quickly formed with Thomas Mein (MTS) Joseph Armstrong (Boarder City Whs) and George Atwood (Cogsett Saltaire) forging clear. There was a full range of ability with future star Mein cornering at an impressive speed, to Declan Oldham (HOPE Factory Racing) the son of ‘Cross Legend National Trophy winner Paul Oldham (HOPE Factory Racing) showing he can also ride like his dad aboard his coaster bike!
The Youth riders rode on the full Hawes course, which at 1.8km in length is short, but what it lacks in distance it makes up for with dead turns and short steep grassy climbs reminding riders what a unique effort a ‘cross race is as they felt the burn after a summer of Road & MTB!
East Yorkshire visitor, Mike Thomson riding in the colours of Richardson Cycles CC led from start to finish, quickly opening a gap over Stockton's Josh Moody (Adept Precision CC). Moody who is returning to Cyclo-Cross after a few seasons out vowed to close the gap in the next race as he admitted his technique needed some practise! Once the Powerful Thompson was away on his own he cruised to win by over 2 and a half minutes.
First Girl was Emma Brady (MTS) riding in her first Youth CX race after being a force to be reckoned with in the U12's over the last few years she was pushing the boys!
Showing how far real Cyclo-Cross has come in the region over the last few years 46 riders lined up for the main race. With temperatures hitting 25degrees, it was going to be a warm one! At the start the top 3 riders in last year's CXNE Premier League, the MTS trio of Stu Wearmouth, Malcom Lewis & Steve Ward were discussing the possibility of working over Lancashire visitor Paul Oldham (HOPE Factory Racing.) A lighting fast start from Oldham meant he led from start to finish.
Although Wearmouth started like a stunned slug, he was quickly into his stride and onto the wheel of Oldham, as the HOPE man hit the afterburners! ‘Stuie' looked uncomfortable as he hung for grim death for the entire first lap. The small assembled crowd gasped as Oldham & Wearmouth were round in under 5 minutes!
Behind the leading two Matlock visitor Lee Shunburne (Matlock CC) and Steve Ward were trying to escape Blackhawk Cycles Alan Nixon. Shunburne was digging deep to loose Ward, sensing the opportunity to earn the additional BC points, that were on offer as the event was a Category B race, was slipping away.
After half distance, Ward had daylight and Nixon was trying to avoid being caught by organiser Keith Murray (HOPE Factory Racing) and Malcom Lewis. These two were locked together for the whole race. As each rider took turns to attack each other, former Time Triallist Murray opting to Smash it in the headwind straights and the more nimble Lewis opting try and out corner Murray in the corners.
Oldham had rattled out his 12th lap after 46minutes as he heard the bell having lapped the whole field up to the Murray/Lewis pairing! These two were the last to make it through without being lapped and commence a last lap and finish on the same lap as the winner.
Oldham saluted the crowd in the manner of Svyn Nys winning a Superprestige race. He looked emotional as he took his first of many hoped for wins this season. With Wearmouth finishing 57 seconds behind and ‘Wardy' at 2:17, the first prize of £100 cash courtesy of KUDU Bikes had been well earned! Easily filling his campervan with diesel for the journey back to HOPE HQ in Barnoldswick.
The second round of the Kudu Bikes.co.uk CXNE series is at Richmond High School on Sunday 19th September. See www.cxne.org.uk
