Taylor Takes Yorkshire Opener

The Yorkshire Points winter Cyclo-Cross series began on a warm, breezy day at Oakbank School, near Keighley, with the course in almost perfect condition. Oakbank is a sports college and with extensive playing fields cut into a wooded hillside, it provides a good mix of terrain and organizer Peter Charlton had plotted a route which combined both open grassy drags down playing fields with short, sharp climbs and other technical sections.

First to try their hand were the youth riders and national champion, Billy Harding was soon out on his own at the front and soloing to a great win, two minutes clear of Edwyn Oliver Evans. Seb Marsh and Benny Pygott enjoyed a close battle for the first half of the race, before Seb finally pulled clear to claim third. Amira Mellor was the first female rider home in tenth.

The Veterans and Women boasted a field of over 80 riders and it was Mike Young who strung them out over the start loop. However, Jonathan Watson, another traditionally fast starter had moved into the lead at the end of the wooded section which made up much of the first half of the lap and he soon moved into a 6 or 7 second lead over Richard Binks and Mike Young.

However, Binks and Young slowly dragged Watson back and mid way through the fourth lap they caught the Charge Bikes rider. Watson then counter-attacked going back into the wooded section and Binks and Young had no answer. Watson was never able to relax, but he had the race under control from then on in and took an impressive win. Binks and Young battled right to the line, with Binks taking second after Young slipped off on the final hairpin bend. Nikola Butler was the first woman home in 62nd place.

The Senior/Junior race was perhaps the best of the day. Lancashire visitor Paul Bethell moved into an early lead and really strung the field out over the first lap. This left Veterans Chris Young and Noel Clough, who have dominated the series in recent years, struggling to keep contact with the head of the race.

Going with Bethell were Ian Taylor, Pete Middlehurst, Tim Baldwin and first year Junior, Joseph Moses. And it was Taylor who took up the initiative as Bethell faded, moving to the front and then forging a gap. Middlehurst faded, but Baldwin and Moses kept up the pressure on Taylor, who extended his lead gradually through the middle laps of the race.

Behind them, Chris Young and Noel Clough had finally got into their stride and they began to work their way towards the front. With a couple of laps to go they moved past Moses and then Baldwin into second and third, but by then Taylor was long gone and indeed the Craven Energy Tri rider was still extending his lead right to the finish.

Young took second, five seconds clear of Clough, with Baldwin a further 15 seconds back. Joseph Moses was fifth, a great ride by the younger brother of former national junior champion Thomas.
