Report: Wednesfield v Poole

Event: 9th May 2010, Wednesfield | Report and Images: Andy Whitehouse

Fresh from their second place in the recent European club championships Wednesfield Aces were eager for a win in the Premier league clash against old adversaries Poole. Wednesfield's Matt Berharel rode to a fine nineteen points taking four wins and a second and proving what a talent the youngster is. Not to be outdone team mate Terry Norman once again showed that track skill and experience can not be bettered with eighteen and two bonus points taking four wins and three seconds with two assists. Poole's Gavin Wheeler was the pick of the Poole riders earning sixteen points with three wins along the way and two head-to-head tussles with Lee Aris.

Wednesfield got off to a flying start in heat one with the first of their eight 7-3 heats wins and Matt Beharrel storming away from the tapes and holding position to take the four points with the Aces captain Chris Jewkes rolling in second place. An intriguing match looked to be on the cards with both teams sharing the points in the next three heats, with fine team riding from both sides, notably Gavin Wheeler holding off Scott Doherty in heat three, keeping the Wednesfield rider in fourth position.

Heat five saw Wednesfield's Beharrel take his second win of the day but it was Wednesfield's Dylan Radcliffe who stole the race taking second place, holding off Pooles Ben Donohue with some superb riding from the youngster. Heat seven saw Poole's first win of the day with captain Gavin Wheeler out-riding Berharel into second place and another five points shared. Wednesfield went into the break twelve points to the good at 51-39.

Poole's Sam Hearn took the win in heat ten after a shoulder-to-shoulder tussle with Wednesfield's Scott Doherty after a re-run because of a first bend crash which saw all four riders called back to the grid. Heat eleven saw two giants of the sport come together for the first time in the match, Lee Aris and Gavin Wheeler gave the crowd some close racing with Wheeler getting the better of his opponent when Aris crashed on the second lap allowing the Poole rider to take four points. A superb pass by Chris Jewkes on Poole's Tom Reed in heat twelve set up another 7-3 win for Aces and the match was slowly slipping away from Dorset team now fifteen points adrift.

COMBINATION MATCH

Poole's Matt Mildon was the pick of the teams in the Premier League Combination match. The young rider rode well above his years taking two fine wins on his way to sixteen points+ two bonus. His first win came in the first heat taking Wednesfield's Tony De Leon out on the third bend and riding on to take the four points. A fine pass by Wednesfield's Roger Cox on Leyton Glover in heat three gave the Ace's rider a well crafted win. With Wednesfield's Mick Aris suffering on the bike after a motorbike accident the previous day the Poole pairing of Sam Hearn and Matt Mildon proved too strong in heat four and took the heat 7-3. With the injured Aris finding the going tough and an off-form Tony De Leon, heat six saw another 7-3 in favour of the Poole side with a win from Dean Hook closely followed home by Leyton Glover. Aces' Luke Draisey took his first win of the day in heat seven, holding off Sam Hearn to take the four points and with the only female in the match, Wednesfield's Charlie Ellitts bringing up the rear the points were split.

It was Mildon who was having a great day on the bike holding off Roger Cox in heat ten to take a fine win from the gate and with Sam Hearn coming in third spot the Dorset side pulled out a twenty one advantage 60-39. De Leon was excluded in the final heat for leaving the track and gaining a place which gave referee Al Bently no option but to sent the rider back to the pits. The Final scores run out 75- 52 in favour of Poole but with thirty five first team penalty points added to the total and only five points added the Wednesfield score, the Midland side took the match 87-80.
