Cycle Training FAQs

What is Cycle Training?
Cycle training is cycling proficiency for the 21st century where adults and young people are taught to ride safely and confidently on modern roads.

What is Bikeability?
Bikeability is a brand name for currently the only Government approved and nationally recognised award for Cycle Training.

What is a Cycle Training Instructor?
A Cycle Training Instructor (CTI) has completed a 4 day Cycle Training Instructor Course. They are qualified to teach bikeability levels 1 - 3 to adults and children.

What is an Assistant Cycle Training Instructor?
An Assistant Cycle Training Instructor works alongside a fully qualified CTI having completed a 2 day Assistant Instructor Course. Their remit is different to that of a full CTI, reflecting the shorter training time involved for Assistants and the lack of post course assessments on an Assistant course

I want to become a Bikeability Instructor; will an Instructor course qualify me to do this?
You'll qualify as a National Standard Instructor once you have completed an Instructor Course. You will then need to either work for an existing Bikeability scheme, or register your own scheme - there isn't a qualification called Bikeability Instructor.

What work is available for Instructors?
Instructors will often find work with Local Authorities, School Sport Partnerships or private training companies. The work is generally casual and flexible to suit other commitments you might have. Working on a Bikeability scheme is particularly suited to people not seeking regular work, parents of children in school or students.

How long is the Instructor qualification valid for?
After you compete the course your Provisional Instructor Status is valid for six months, after which you must compete a Post Course Assessment. Once you are a Qualified Instructor, your status will last indefinitely, as long as you have relevant insurance and continue to practise.

What are the Summer Cycling Schools?
The summer schools are 2day Bikeability training courses that are organised by British Cycling for children within the North West. The summer schools have been run in conjunction with a number of football clubs including Manchester City and Bolton Wonders and in cycling venues such as the Manchester Velodrome and Tameside outdoor circuit. If you would be interested in hosting a school holiday programme then please contact the Cycle Training team on: 0161 274 2129 or email cycletraining@britishcycling.org.uk

Do British Cycling deliver Bikeability?
Yes, British Cycling employs a number of instructors to deliver Cycle Training in Manchester. Although they are predominantly based in schools, we are able to offer group and adult cycle training courses.

I commute into work on my bike and would like some more confidence riding on the roads, are there any cycle training courses for me?
