Getting started but worried about gears
By stephensmithstone - Saturday, 20th February 2010

Just tried out my first road bike and Im a bit concered about the gears , I managed to start peddling on the highest gear , didnt get chance to try it for a long run. Im coming from riding a hybird bike and its hard to get going in the top gear on that bike , so just need some confirmation that its ok to be able to set off in the highest gear on a decent road bike as I thought that the highest gear was for when you had moment

cheers

Stephen I'm surprised you've even thought about starting in the highest gear, you wouldn't start your car in top. Count your chain rings; if you have 3 put it on the middle one and put it in middle of the cogs at the back. Try that, it should be easy to start. Move up or down the cogs at the back until you have comfortable starting gear. If you have 2 chain rings put it in the smallest one and try one of the cogs near the middle one. Then experiment as before. http://bicycletutor.com/gear-shifting/ http://southcoastbikes.co.uk/articles.asp?article=Gears There is lots of advice on the web
