British Cycling Annual Awards

Tracy Moseley receives Special Recognition Award at British Cycling's 'Oscars'

Posted: 27th February 2011

The British Cycling Annual Awards hit Birmingham's Hilton Metropole hotel, with over 500 people attending a memorable evening celebrating the achievements of everyone from tireless volunteers to World champions.

The Awards evening is a monolith in the British Cycling calendar, a chance to honour the previous season's champions and formally present their trophies. From Youth champions to Masters to World champions, the evening was a vivid demonstration of the vibrancy of cycle sport, across all disciplines.

The evening began with a drinks reception for the 500 strong contingent before heading into the main awards arena where Hugh Porter welcomed the assembled guests. This was followed by an address from British Cycling President Brian Cookson OBE before the Youth and over 50 champions came forth to collect their trophies from Women's Downhill World Champion Tracy Moseley.

Following the first two courses of a sumptuous three course meal, the awards continued with trophies for Masters and Volunteers, presented by Ian Austin, Shadow Sports Minister and MP for Dudley North. Ian has been a very effective advocate for cycling in Westminster, helping British Cycling to make progress on resolving the problems around road racing and the impact of highways law by keeping pressure on the Government and acting as British Cycling's man on the ground in Westminster.

The programme continued with multiple world champion Rob Hayles talking openly to master of ceremonies Hugh Porter about his illustrious career, his future and his broader life outside of cycling.

The packed programme continued, with Penny Knight of event sponsor Leigh Day and Co solicitors (British Cycling's specialist laywers working on accident claims) on-hand to present the final round of awards, this time honouring Para-Cycling, junior, under 23 and women's champions before the evening moved on to its climax and the presentation of the Special Recognition award.

After many years of hard effort and determination, Tracy Moseley finally pulled on the illustrious rainbow jersey for the first time in 2010 and was rewarded for her achievements by receiving the standout award of the event, and closing the show with a well-deserved standing ovation from the audience, capping off a truly memorable awards evening.
