British Cycling National Trophy Series Round 4 (Mallory Park) | Round 1 Report | Round 2 Report | Round 3 Report | Major Events Page | Sunday, 20th November, promoted by Rugby Velo, report from British Cycling's Larry Hickmott
Far from being foggy and icy, the day at Mallory dawned cold but bright -- very bright! Look at that sky -- blue and not a cloud. When I left home an hour before the start of the first race, the roads were iced up and the fog was pea soup thick. With such cold conditions, I was expecting an ice rink to have formed on the grass around the Mallory Park motor racing circuit in Leicestershire but the day turned out to be not only sunny but what ice there might have been, was no where to be seen when racing started. It was in fact, quite a nice day for racing and there were during the day some quite exciting races to compliment the good weather.
As always, the first race of the day was the Youth event and in this the leaders of the various categories in the Youth series were all victors with the race won by VC Deal's Alex Paton who didn't take long to go clear and he maintained a solid lead over a chase group of three, Ben Roach from the promoting club Rugby Velo, Scott Thwaites (Merlin) and winner of the last round, Ben Plain (Hargroves Cycles). Whilst Paton rode on alone out front, the three chasers tested each other out and it was Thwaites who managed to stay strong, riding clear of Roach whilst Plain fell back to 6th at the end. Winner of the Youth Girls was again Annabel Simpson (EVR Raleigh) who seems to have no equal and remains unbeaten whilst the same can be said for Luke Gray (Dorset Rough Riders) who extended his lead in the Under 14 competition. The only change was that in the under 14 girls, Penny Rowson (Sheffield Phoenix) was beaten by Samantha Bryant (Marin UK). These two were together for much of the race but in the race to the line Bryant was too fast for Rowson who has been first under 14 girl in the last two races.
It took a little coaxing but we got them to smile in the end even though yellow jersey Mick Bell probably didn't feel too happy after 'one of those days'. Phil Roach -- he of the biggest smile in the host clubs Rugby Velo jersey -- is certainly pleased though and is now Bell's closest challenger in the series. On the right is Andrew Shaw (2nd) and on the left is Duncan Walmsley (3rd). Next was the Veterans race and this was one of the best of the day as series leader in the 40 plus category Mick Bell was put under pressure and found the course tough going, finishing the race in 13th place. Bell (London Fire Brigade) had been in the leading group for much of the race but as the attacks kept coming from the likes of Phil Roach and Andrew Shaw, the leading group split, and many including Bell found themselves losing ground. Winner of the race was Phil Roach from the promoting club, Rugby Velo. There could have been no better place for his victory and at the finish he had eight seconds over VC Lincoln's Andrew Shaw. As we were leaving after the event finished, Phil still had the energy to help in the dismantling of the course and was pleased with the win and how it has opened up the series with one round to go in Wales in December. In third was Duncan Walmsley (VC Lincoln) who came from behind to catch Andy Barnard, a former VC Lincoln rider now racing for MI racing, and who was one of the last riders to drop off the leading group.
Left to right, Joseph Rowe (3rd), Roy Hunt (1st) and Geoff Bores (2nd). In the over 50's, it was Roy Hunt from Science in Sport who again rode away from his challengers and at the finish, was over a minute clear of second placegetter Geoff Bores (Lee Valley Youth CC). After the lunch break, the Juniors and Women were first into the starting pen with the Juniors first away to begin their race. The Junior category has seen three riders dominant in the series so far, Tom Last (series leader), Stephen Adams (Sherwood CC) and David Fletcher (Newark Castle CC). Each of them have won a round and it showed as they each attacked to try and get clear. Several times, series leader Tom Last was trailing by 50 metres as his rivals tried to get away from him but each time he fought his way back to the leaders. Tom even managed a few attacks of his own, gaining 50 metres and splitting his rivals up but each time, the others came back at him and it wasn't until the final lap where it was the turn of Stephen Adams, winner in Southampton, to fall back and leave Tom Last and David Fletcher to fight out the finish with Fletcher winning the sprint and gaining his second win of the series.
Tom Last (Matlock CC) and Sam Webster (Triangle RT) are first out of the blocks as they race up the club to the start/finish area and the course proper.
Left to right, Amy Thompson (1st junior), Louise Robinson (3rd and 1st veteran), Sue Thomas (1st and new leader of the series) and Amy Hunt (2nd). In the Womens event, series leader Helen Wyman was away in Belgium and it was left to her closest challenger, Sue Thomas (VoodooCycles.net) to regain the lead and a comfortable lead in the series with one round to go. It wasn't that easy for Thomas though as a new challenger emerged in Amy Hunt (Onimpex-Bioracer), the British Cycling Circuit Race champion for Women. At the start, it was Clare Gross who set the pace with her teammate Gabby Day the closest challenger with Thomas. It didn't take long for Sue however to find her feet in the slippery conditions and she soon clawed her way clear of Day to chase Gross. Amy Hunt meanwhile was back in 8th place, her efforts on the track the night before perhaps preventing her from getting a good start. As Thomas made inroads into the lead of Clare Gross, Amy Hunt did the same to the riders in front of her and one by one, passed them all to take up the chase of Thomas. The gap between Thomas and Hunt at one stage was no more than 15 to 20 seconds but Thomas, urged on by Barrie Clarke who is a master at Cyclo Cross, stayed strong and at the finish won by a clear minute from the youngster Hunt. In third was National Cyclo-Cross Champion Louise Robinson, (Stourbridge CC) who was looking in ominously good form as the countdown to the national championships starts. Afterwards, Sue Thomas was as ever, all smiles and pleased with a win in conditions far different to those she had been racing in when in Cyprus recently for a Mountain Bike race there where she won. "I think my start has improved a bit - I was in about third this time - and a few people then passed me over the top of the hill. I wasn't too unhappy with it as I have been doing a bit of work on it with Barrie - it certainly wasn't as bad as in Southampton!" Sue now has a good lead in the series and may well hold on to it in Abergavenny if her form at the moment is anything to go by. Talking about the series, Sue explained "it was my aim to secure the overall. At the start of the season, that was in the back of my mind and I'll be pleased if I do that." Other goals include the national championships and more. "It's a great honour to be national champion and that will be one of my aims and I'm also looking to ride the World Championships and that will probably take priority to be honest." Sue's long term aim is to make a successful comeback in mountain bike cross country and once the Cyclo-Cross season is finished, she says she'll probably take a few weeks easy. "I think you need to take a break between the two otherwise come May, when you really want to be going well and onto July for the Nationals, you're too tired, so I will have a break before doing a few training camps in February and March to bring the form back up." Recently Sue went to Cyprus but says that after returning from a fairly warm place to a very cold England, she has struggled to get used to the cold conditions. "I have felt absolutely dead when I've come in after training in the cold" she told us. "I was bit worried today how I'd be but it worked out okay. I have been waiting until later in the day to go out training and haven't had too much of a problem with ice. We have just had to stay clear of lanes where the water runs over and we've been okay so far". Finally, asked did she like the course, Sue replied "Yes, its not to everyone's liking but it teaches you to ride cross properly and there is a lot of sprinting out of corners. There were an awful lot of bends you had to get right and I think that's something I have improved on this season. The trick to this course I think is to save your energy on the top bit and really fight up the climb and then sprint out of the corners fast. Try to relax going into the corners and then powering out of them. If you go flat out all the way round, you end up making mistakes and that was something I was conscience of after I crashed last time racing on the rivet. Today, the plan was to get a gap and ride at my own pace and not to panic. One slip here can cost you a lot of time."
Lap 1: Clare Gross leads from Gabby Day and Sue Thomas with the rest already losing ground. In the Elite mens series, Jody Crawforth was in yellow as he has been since round two but like many of the other races, it wasn't until the every end that he stamped his dominance on the race. Ian Field, wearing the green jersey as leader of the Under 23 series, was the first out of the starting blocks, already lengths clear of the rest as he crested the hill after the start. Crawforth and co though were not far away and the race soon settled down with the favourites challenging each other at the front of the race. After the first lap, Field was still leading but the gaps were opening up behind. Crawforth was with Field, with Belgian David Willemsens a few lengths adrift with former junior series winner Alex Atkins (Evans Cycles) starting well and Stuart Bowers (Hargroves) also on the pace early on. Not to be seen was Dave Collins having a slow start but making ground as was Steven Roach. Crawforth soon stamped on the pedals a bit harder and broke the lead group up and then the former winner Willemsens also had a go and he and Crawforth were soon on their own at the front of the race. But Roach and Collins came back at them and mid race, there was a leading group of four, Crawforth, Roach, Willemsens and Collins. Both Crawforth and Willemsens were attacking hard however and the leading group split again and again before regrouping again. The pace was certainly far from steady as each time I pointed the camera lens at the leaders, it was either Willemsens gapping Crawforth or the other way round. The Belgium's luck ran out though over the closing laps as he had the first of his falls. One minute we had four leaders and then all of a sudden, there was only three as they started the descent down the grassy bank to the bottom end of the course near the car park. Willemsens was in trouble after his fall too, seemingly having problems having injured one of his legs. Too make matters worse, no sooner had he gained time on the riders who had passed him, he fell again on the switchbacks closest to the motor racing circuit.
With the sun starting to set, Dave Collins takes flight and leaves Steven Roach (113) to hold on to 3rd place. The other three in the lead group pushed on with Collins noticeably on the front, driving hard. Crawforth was as always looking comfortable whilst Roach was grimacing at the back, not unusual for him in his give it everything style of racing. As the riders came to a series of twists and turns up a grassy bank closest to the motor racing circuit, Crawforth applied the pressure for the final time and gapped the other two with Roach the closest to him but losing ground. Whilst the yellow jersey opened up a gap, Collins and Roach rode together to chase him down but were unable to bring him back to heel and with less than one lap to go, Collins gapped Roach to start his pursuit for second place. Crawforth held the slender lead he had all the way to the finish where he started his celebration early as the spectators clapped him home. First came the raising of the arms in the air and then, just to confuse us awaiting photographers, he put them down and grabbed the bars and lifted his front wheel to wheely across the line! Way to go Jody! Under 20 seconds later, Collins freewheeled across the line 10 seconds clear of Steven Roach. Steven, who is a former member of the Rugby Velo (still a second claim member), was also first in the under 23 category to make it a good day for the promoting club.
Elite Men Left to right: Dave Collins (2nd), Jody Crawforth (1st) and Steven Roach (3rd). It was though yet another great day for Evans Cycles' Crawforth who extended his lead in the series and he was obviously enjoying his time in the yellow jersey and winning races. "I didn't feel as good as I normally do after a pretty stressful week but I felt okay in the race. David (Willemsens) attacked, and I was struggling with him a bit but confident I could stay with him. Then we slowed up a bit and Dave (Collins) and Steven caught us up and I just sat back a little bit. I stayed in the group until three or so laps to go before I made my move." "It was pretty slippery out there and cold too. The win gives me a good lead in the series and although I'm not too keen on the course at Abergavenny, I'm going to try and win it anyway. Hopefully I still have some more to come as I haven't felt as good as I know I can." To help keep the form and continue the build up for the next round and then the National Championships, Jody intends to do some local racing and continue to enjoy his 'cross season." Second again after doing the same in the last round, was Scott UK rider Dave Collins. "I can't complain" he says of the race. "It was as good as I could have got out of the situation - Jody has got the kick especially on a course with all these corners." Watching the favourites through out the series, they all seem on a par but Crawforth's ability to get around the twists and turns quickly and apply the pressure there seems to work in his favour. Collin's agrees saying "That's right - I think in actual terms of fitness, there are five or six guys all on a par but Jody has got the technical ability as well. He's also a lot smaller than me and seems to get around those corners a lot quicker".
David Willemsens falls for at least the second time in the race and loses more time to the leaders. "I was struggling in the first ten or fifteen minutes to get going and on the first lap was in 10th or so and then got lucky with a few things. Then the Belgium guy dropped to the ground and split the group and we pressed on to make sure he didn't come back to us. I was trying to keep it together for as long as possible, and eased off a bit because I didn't want to do all the work on the front and then Jody jumped us as we were easing off. Once he got the gap and 20 seconds, that was it around here. Unless he blew, we weren't going to see him round here." Talking about the series, he says he's pleased adding "I just have to keep my eye on Ian Field in the next round but other than that, I'm pleased to have come back after last season's dreadful showing. Moving house last year, I didn't have the time to train but you have to have time out once in a while don't you". In third place and first Under 23 rider, was Steven Roach (SIS/Trek). I started by saying that the ride at Mallory looked like being his best ride so far this season? "I managed to come out of this one without crashing which helped. The other ones I crashed like at Southampton I crashed on the first lap and ended up in last place and had to chase the whole race but it was good today." It wasn't until a lap or two into the race that Steven made his charge for the lead and he explained that early on his legs felt a bit sore. "I have been doing long rides this week so I didn't expect to be flying to start with but came through at the end." Talking about the Belgium challenger who seemed to be giving them a rough time, Steven says "when I started to apply the pressure on the descent he seemed to wrap himself around a post so we managed to get rid of one of the riders." Steven now looks forward to Abergavenny where he was born to hopefully finish two places higher and win his first race in the series.
