Hillingdon Circuit Race (28th August)

BC West Thames/Hemel Hempstead CC, Hillingdon Circuit, 28/8/04
A sparse race calendar plus a greatly enhanced prize list from the usual Tuesday evening series at Hillingdon attracted plenty of visitors for the first of the four Saturday afternoon series that follow-up. Enough, indeed, for the organisers to have to raid reserve stocks of numbers kept for emergencies. Multiple national champion James Taylor (City of Edinburgh RC), most recently crowned National Madison Champion, made his drive from Bristol up the M4 to West London justified by taking the sprint from virtually the full 54 man field to win £50, with Paul Crook (Angliasport/Condor RT) and Chris Doel (Tm Quest/The Bike Shop) upholding local honour in the next two places to deny relative visitor Paul Pickup (Liphook Cycles) although he has won before at Hillingdon.

The enhanced prize list for the main race continues for the next three Saturdays. An extra event was for handcycling in recumbent wheelchairs which attracted seven competitors from as far away as Scarborough for the one hour event, which the BC West Thames and Hemel Hempstead CC organisers found was a mere sprint as the usual distance would be the full marathon distance while the world championships is over 106 miles! Near non-stop wisecracking did not slou Mike Bishop (Brockworth) from covering 20 miles in 1h 3m 36s with only Rob Wickham (Ashford, Middx) remaining unlapped. A full Grand Prix circuit is planned for the UK next season with the Hillingdon organisers promising to host a race again.

The scheduled wheelchair race was not held as the majority of potential competitors were at a pre-Paralympics training camp in Hyeres, France.
