TWICKENHAM CC/EVANS CYCLES WINTER SERIES

JUST POSTED: Interview with Series Winner, Lewis Atkins
We talk to the 16 year old who went from winning the Youth Series for four years to go and win the Elite series in his year of trying .... Interview and Round-By-Round look back

WINTER SERIES FINAL ROUND

In the Final round of the Twickenham CC/Evans Cycles Winter Series, Great Britain Endurance rider, Tony Gibb (Plowman Craven RT) broke away from a break before halfway and stayed away until the end. Gibb had just returned last week from having done the Pro Tour of Majorca along with many of the Worlds top road riders and was obviously in good form. Having broke away very early on his own, he made it look easily, putting plenty of time into the chase group as well as lapping the field. Afterwards he admitted he had spent the race in Zone 5, so perhaps it wasn't as easy as it looked but just to make sure, Tony won the bunch gallop in style as the photo shows.

Tony Gibb turns on the style as he outsprints the bunch he has already lapped to win the Final Round of the Winter Series.

The 'ride' though goes to 16 year old Lewis Atkins who had already clinched the Winter Series. With probably the biggest field ever in a round of the Winter Series, Lewis got in the main break with Paul Pickup, Chris Doel and Mark Perry for company and stayed there until the end, finishing fourth. All in all, it was a fitting end to a wonderful series organised yet again by Doug Collins. who writes....

"My sincere thanks to everyone who helped, particularly to John (LondonCycleSport.com) and Larry (Britishcycling.org.uk) and Barbara for the collation of results. But most of all to all the regular riders who clubbed together to buy me two presents and card, it was very touching and I felt very humbled by the gifts, but nevertheless it was very much appreciated. The object of the Winter Series, is for winter miles under racing conditions in preparation for the coming season, and I hope that it achieves this. It also shows Hillingdon Borough Council our intention of making full use of this wonderful facility.

Finally my thanks to Tony Gibb for presenting the prizes and donating his 1st prize to Hillingdon Slipstreamers. My best wishes to everyone, and hope you all have a successful season, based on your winter efforts.

Lewis Atkins in action during the final round of the Winter Series which he won overall, not bad for a 16 year old!
