CTT National Hillclimb Championships
The course was a return to the short, sharp and steep school of climbing compared to the longer "Road" climb of the Cat and Fiddle used in 2002. The mile and bit ascent began with a couple of hundred yards of gradient at about one in seven and a right hand bend between very high stone walls, before briefly relaxing then ramping into a tight, steep left hander. This corner then led riders up a long steepening straight with a fierce hairpin to the right which again took the gradient up to maybe one in five. A short straight at this gradient then led into a left hander again and then the course ran out through a couple of smoother corners at gentler gradient, before a merciless finishing straight, which although not excessively steep, seemed to go on forever between high stone walls. The weather was bitterly cold for early starters and hardly any better for the final riders approaching twelve noon. Thankfully the rain of Saturday didn't return and there was little or no wind, so conditions were actually pretty much perfect.
It was some 30 minutes later that Life Repair's Ben Greenwood posted a time of 5:50.1 to take the lead. Ten minutes later, Tim Bayley of Arctic Shorter Rochford RT then shaved another couple of seconds off the fastest time with 5:48.1, only for David Clarke of Team Endurasport.com.principia to take a further ten seconds off ten minutes later. David's time proved much more durable and withstood attacks for over an hour from some of the best riders in the field, including hill record holder Ian Stott, who was three seconds slower. Indeed it took the favourite for the event, Jim Henderson, to finally crack Clark's time and he did it in style. Riding fixed and looking smooth and controlled throughout, Henderson soared up the climb in a time of 5m 19.2 seconds to take an amazing 19 seconds off Clark's time. Henderson's greatest threat was last man and defending champion Mark Lovatt, king of domestic road racing, but a rider who prefers longer, wearing climbs to short, sharp shocks like this hill. Lovatt was encouraged all the way to the top by the large crowd who had gathered on the slopes, but he simply couldn't match Henderson's remarkable effort, though he did just slip inside Clark's time by half a second. So, Henderson picked up his fifth crown, taking him ahead of chris Boardman who has four, equal to Sturat Dangerfield, and just one behind Huddersfield legend Granville Sydney, who won the title six times during the sixties and seventies. Earlier in the day, Ruth Dorrington took the women's title with a fine
