Report: Looking replendent in the National Champion jersey, Ian Bibby from the promoting club led the charge into Oakhill College grounds from the town centre start in Whalley High Street. This was the start of the Science in Sport Megacross II. Once into the grounds Bibby continued to force the pace until an elite group of 4 riders emerged.

This included local riders Ian Wilkinson (Scienceinsport.com), Paul Oldham (Giant), the evergreen pro Nick Craig (Trek UK) and Bibby himself. Behind this group was U23 National Champion Shaun Snodden, battling it out with George Richardson and Noel Clough - all chasin hard. The race was always going to be between the leading group of 4 riders though.

The casual observer could have been forgiven for thinking that 16 year old Bibby was just leading the charge to set things up for his older team mate. Eyebrows began to be raised when, 30 minutes later, he was still looking comfortable in this very elite group of classy riders. Wilkinson pressed on hard in the middle of the race and was looking like a good bet for a local winner until Craig put in a hard turn and first Bibby then Wilkinson lost contact.

Oldham then picked up the gauntlet and kept the pressure on to keep the gap between Bibby and Wilkinson. They were trying desperately to get back in touch, but failed to break Craig who was looking comfortable breathing down Oldham's neck. With 2 laps to go it looked as though the final outcome would be decided in a sprint between Oldham and Craig, with Wilkinson and Bibby needing some sort of incident to regain the leaders.

They nearly got it when the pressure finally got to Oldham and he crashed. Craig spied his chance and sprinted away on the final lap to collect the £250 first prize and the Megacross II trophy. 'Bibs' came in a highly credible 4th place to collect the Junior prize - he must be pleased with his preparation for the European Junior Championships. Good to see so many SiS riders rolling up their sleeves and helping to marshall and organise the event. Well done to all for a terrific, well organised day!
