KILLEEN LAYS DOWN OLYMPIC GAUNTLET
GB’s Liam Killeen had a huge moral-booster at the weekend with a win at a trial event on next year’s Athens Olympics mountain bike course in the hills above the Greek capital. Facing a big field of 125 riders, including some of the top names in the sport, including the Dutch and Czech teams, Killeen was in no mood to sit back and treat it purely as a “recce”.
From the gun, Liam was at the front of the field with Dutch world number one Bart Brentjens and New Zealand’s Kashi Leuchs. Leuchs held a slight advantage over the other two for the first couple of laps, but then Liam took over at the front and he and Brentjens dropped the New Zealander.

With a lap and a half of the six lap event to go, Liam attacked on a climb and quickly pulled out a 5 second advantage over Brentjens, which became 20s by the end of the lap and a minute and a half at the end of the race.

Meanwhile, Oli Beckingsale, who is currently recovering from a recent illness, showed few signs of it in finishing fifth after a very consistent ride.

The feedback from the riders and team staff is that the course is a good one. It’s apparently pretty tough with some 230 metres of climbing per lap, split into two main climbs as the course loops out from the start/finish area twice. With lap times in the region of 20 minutes, the Olympic race is likely to go to seven laps.

The course is in the midst of a typically Mediterranean landscape of brush and rocky outcrops and features the usual cart tracks/fire roads and some single-track. Apparently all the descents are quick, which makes it hard to recover between efforts and certainly not a course where you can hide in any way. With the premium being on fitness, it was given a firm thumbs up by the GB team. A couple of photos of the course, taken earlier in the year are below the results.
