Northern Fours and Junior League series The Tameside club hosted the 5th Round of the Northern Fours and Junior League series at Stockport on Sunday. Astonishingly the home Stockport team failed to put in an appearance, although there were sufficient officials present from Tameside to run the full race meeting. In the opening match this left Astley & Tyldesley to do battle with Hull, with both teams recording default wins in their races against Stockport. Three of the four races were drawn 5-5, with a 6-4 heat win to the Binkowski / Hack pairing over Schofield / Goff proving decisive in ensuring that A & T won by two points. Northern Fours League match result: Astley & Tyldesley Miners' Welfare / CTA Direct 49 Hull 47 Stockport 0. Astley & Tyldesley scorers: Hull scorers: Other Northern Fours League match results: In the Northern Junior League match, A & T finished in 2nd place overall, to move into 2nd place in the table, ahead of Hull, and 5 points behind leaders Sheffield. <> A & T's Becky Heslop raced unbeaten for the fourth successive match in the U-13 category, to move into 2nd place, just 2 points behind the series leader, Lewis Riley of Tameside. Sheffield's Simon Gamble raced unbeaten in the U-16 event, to close the gap on series leader Peter Pearson, also of Sheffield. Bury's Ben Scranage was another unbeaten rider, in the U-19 category, but series leader Darren Spencer of Hull extended his lead over team mate Chris Cooke. Mike Hack extended his lead in the Senior Combination series, with Roy Heslop retaining overall 2nd position. Northern Junior League match result: Last Thursday, Astley & Tyldesley visited Bury for a local derby in the Northern League. Bolstered by the debut of Polish star Pawel Kozlowski and strengthened with the inclusion of secondary registrations from Stoke, Garry Pearce and Rob Machin, A & T were confident of giving their local rivals a close run. Kozlowski won the opening heat, and with Binkowski in his usual tremendous form, A & T held the home team to just 2 points after five heats. A 7-3 to Dyson / Scranage over Kozlowski stretched Bury's lead to six points by the interval. A & T fell apart in the second half, with Kozlowski suffering two exclusions, as Bury romped away to record a 86 - 60 win. The scoreline certainly didn't do the CTA Direct sponsored side justice and didn't reflect the close racing in a hard fought encounter. However, on a dry slippery, rutted track, A & T were on the wrong end of all the bad luck going, and on the wrong end of several contentious refereeing decisions. Having said that Bury deserved their win, showing much better strength in depth and better teamwork. Przemek Binkowski was tremendous for A & T, losing only once to Neil Howarth, but both Pawel Kozlowski (fresh from a 30 hour coach journey from Poland) and Garry Pearce were well below their usual high scores, despite making some excellent starts. Northern League match final score: Bury scorers: Astley & Tyldesley scorers: Przemek Binkowski 19, This Thursday (3rd July), sees A & T staging the 2nd Round of the Manchester League Grand Prix series, starting at 7.30 pm, at the track at the Astley & Tyldesley Miners' Welfare Club, Meanley Road, Gin Pit, Astley, Gt.
