North Devon Road race

Sunday 29th June 2003; 3/4/J; 83km; South Molton North Devon

Karl Hine (Private) came away with the top honours from the North Devon Wheelers 6th Edition of the North Devon RR. The three laps of the South Molton based course were run off in very hot conditions, that combined with the lumpy nature of the course ensured that a steady pace prevailed for the first half of the race.

At the end of the first lap with the race still together Rob Driver (Cambridge University CC) leapt from the bunch to take the first Prime. The gap this opened was enough for Andy Gordon (Mid Devon CC) to take advantage of and he made his move. A move which would see him leading for a further lap and three quarters. He steadily built his advantage on the second lap to a maximum of 1m 20sec and breezed through the second prime. Starting the final lap what was left of the main field were showing no real signs of aggression but never the less were gradually clawing some time back on the lone leader. With around one third of the last lap remaining it became apparent that Gordon was struggling, with what turned out to be cramp and was eventually caught. This gave the rest of the field the opportunity they had been looking for.

Andrew Peters (Mid Devon CC) was the first to move and immediately opened a workable gap before the testing climb of Ash Mill hill. He survived over the top but pulled Karl Hine with him. The two worked together for a short while but Hine was looking for the win and pulled away from Peters with 3km to the finish. He made it stick and coasted across the line in front of a strung out field led in by Tim Carpenter (Team Training FX) and John Clemit (Yeovil CC).
