MOUNTAIN BIKE WORLD CUP
DOUBLE CUP DELIGHT FOR PEAT AND GRIFFITHS
It was an historic weekend for British Downhillers as Steve Peat and
Fionn Griffiths recorded the first ever GB World Cup double, winning
bothe men’s and woemn’s downhill races at the third round
of the 2003 series at Mont-Sainte-Anne, Canada.
Peat has had an injury wrecked season to date so it was a big relief
for his many fans to see him back on form on the relatively short Mont-Sainte-Anne
course. His chances of successfully defending his world Cup title are
long gone, but Steve is still the rider to beat when on-song.
In the Women’s event, Fionn Griffiths recorded her first World
Cup win with fellow Brit Tracy Moseley a close second. Moseley now leads
the World Cup standings, with Fionn moving up fast in third. It’s
easy to take them granted, but Britain now has, in Peat, Moseley and
Griffiths, three of the very best riders in the world.
Meanwhile, in the Men’s Cross-Country event, Liam Killeen was
having his best ride of the series to date, a splendid eleventh, which
lifts him to thirteenth in the series overall and gives him the leader’s
jersey in the Under 23 category.
"I'm really happy to have the jersey, and I had a great race today.
I dropped my chain a couple of times which was pretty annoying as one
time I had to run up a technical section before I could get it back
on, and that's when Bart Brentjens and Christophe Dupouey passed me,
but otherwise I'm really happy. I felt good all the way through the
race and now I'm looking forward to training with Ryder near Vancouver
next week in preparation for the next World Cup race".
