Sussex Cycle Racing League Hove Park

27th June 2003

The evenings racing started off as usual with the youth riders and a total of 14 riders signed on. The 2 under 8 riders had 2 laps and it saw a win for Ryan Gosling VC Jubilee from Sara Gent of Sussex Nomads. Next five riders lined up for the U12 and U10 race over 6 laps, and the five quickly became four as Jack Smith of Brighton Mitre punctured on the first lap allowing Neil McClelland from VC Londres to ride away for the win with Axel Clark of Brighton Mitre taking second place.

7 riders had signed on for the U16 and U14 event over 10 laps and it was a group of five that contested the sprint at the finish with Matthew Howard of VC Jubilee getting the verdict from Daniel Manelfi of Peleton with Amy Thompson of Bike Plus taking third. Despite only 14 riders signing on it was decided to run the senior event over 1 hour. A rapid start saw a group of 8 establish themselves at the head of the race after only five laps.

With three Brighton Mitre riders in the group it looked as though we might get a repeat of the previous round where Toby Leyton of the Mitre rode away to a lone win while his team mates were content to control the race. Sure enough Stuart Fahey of the Mitre was the first of the group to make a break, but it was a short lived move as the other riders in the group pulled him back. Several accelerations from the group eventually saw the numbers reduced to 6, but no one was able to get a gap at the front and with a lap to go it was looking like a sprint finish for the 6. With no one making a move along the back straight Mark Winton of the Lewes Wanderers finally went inside the final 200 metres and held on to win from Toby Leyton with Mick Bell of the London Fire Brigade CC coming in third.
