British Cycling 2003 National Track Championships
Manchester Velodrome, 17th to 23rd of August

Craig MacLean wrapped up a memorable week with victory in the Invitation Keirin event. Heat one was ridden at an uncharacteristically slow pace after the pacing bike had pulled off. Probably the riders were all wary of Craig MacLean's awesome speed and were hoping to find a way of negating it. When MacLean did go, with a lap to go, he clearly didn't give it one hundred percent and Jamie Staff was able to accelerate over the top of him. From there on, these tow riders controlled the race from the front and simply kept Storey and Labrizzi at bay.

Heat two saw a run for the line from a long way out by former national Keirin champion Jon Norfolk. However, he couldn't quite hold off Ross Edgar and Matt Haynes who came past him, Haynes only in the last few metres. The repechage saw Labrizzi, Norfolk and Storey storming to the front and holdng off Thompson for the three remaining places in the final.

The final saw MacLean take the pacing bike wheel, but cede it to Barney Storey. Staff took up a position at the rear, along with Ross Edgar and Norfolk. As the pacing bike pulled off, Storey struck out very early for the line and with the others watching each other he had a lead of four lengths at one lap to go and looked to have a chance of holding on. However, from the pack emerged Craig MacLean who whistled past Storey to win the race by two lengths, with Ross Edgar and Marco Labrizzi also just edging past Storey in the last few metres. In this kind of form, there is no-one in British cycling who can touch Craig MacLean. What a week he's had!
