The Two Day stage race, sponsored by RAC Legal Services, Tour of Warwickshire was won in fine style by Paul Spencer of the Long Eaton CC. Having won the road stage on the Saturday afternoon, he destroyed the field on the final stage by breaking away early on (lap 2 of 9!) and despite a four man chase group going all out to catch him, he held his lead all the way to the finish line.
Paul Spencer took the overall race with 302 points while 2nd was James Perkins with 292 points and 3rd Andrew Moore with 265 points. The race went right to the wire with Paul Spencer’s gamble paying off in the last stage. It must be noted that Paul prior to the event was a 3rd Category rider, a status he will not be enjoying any longer. Rachel Heal again rode very strongly to take the women’s overall prize. Martin Tolley Team Vision was first Vet. John Dalton of Cheltenham & County C.C. was the first 4 Cat. The first team was Composite Team C containing Daniel Alexander & James Furniss, Matlock C.C. and Paul Spencer the overall winner.

Stage 1 – 5.7km Prologue
With riders setting off into a blustery wind it was going to be a strong
riders day. James Perkins, Zenith Cycling Club powered his way to the
finish in 7.35 minutes beating Charlie Evans of Knaresborough R.T. by
9 seconds (7.44) 3rd place went to Chris Taylor of Stourbridge C.C. a
further 7 seconds down (7.51) It is interesting to note that the Points
System being employed for this Stage Race with was designed to promote
racing right to the very end of the event saw Paul Spencer (the eventual
winner) in 12th place.

This stage did not go without incident, 17 punctures, one cracked frame and a bunch sprint crash in final few metres added to the gloomy conditions of the day. Paul Spencer road very strongly throughout the race and eventually managed to out sprinting David Asbridge, Cheltenham County. Third place was taken by Dean Arey RaceScene C.C. The aggressive riding of totally committed Rachel Heal, Team Power Bar was not going unnoticed and maintained her position as leading lady. With a fine 4th place James Perkins was able to hang on to the leaders jersey.

Stage 3 – 13km Team Time Trial
A much brighter day with ideal racing conditions for the TTT However,
again not without incident when a 260 Ton Heavy Load with a Police escort
came on to the end of the course. Fortunately, with some quick negotiations
with the Police the load was parked in a lay-by until the event finished.
Only a couple of teams were delayed slightly. The Zenith C.C. were well
fired up to defend their team mate leaders jersey and finished in a winning
time of 17.48. Stourbridge C.C. came in 2nd in 17.59. Team Vision 3rd
in 18.12. Paul Spencer’s team was 4th in 18.24. James Purkins stayed in
the leaders Orange jersey for the final stage

James Perkins the race leader throughout carried a 28 point advantage over Paul Spencer with Andrew Moore in 3rd 17 points adrift. Amazingly given that he considers himself poor at time trials Paul Spencer attacked right from the start and quickly established a comfortable lead. Despite the best efforts of James Perkins and his team more and more riders slipped off the front of the bunch. The circuit was taking its toll on many of the riders as the continual accents of the finishing hill caused the bunch to split. Paul Spencer came in a clear winner, David Asbridge 2nd and Martin Gee Bradgate CRT 3rd.
