Mens 1km Time Trial-Open(CP Div 3/4) Final Gold and World Record for GB's Darren Kenny Cycling has yet another Golden hero after Darren Kenny won the Gold medal on day in the Mens 1km Time Trial-Open(CP Div 3/4). Kenny went into the Games as one of the favourites. On his victory: “This is fantastic. I don’t believe it. This is a result of two and a half years of hard work. I did the fastest race of my life. I was very well supported by the coaches and my sponsors also. I want to dedicate this medal to my little boy Brandon. It was a very exciting final that we have to wait until the end to find out who would be the winner. Fortunately it's me. The bad news is that I have to do it again tomorrow”.

More Gold for GB In Paralympics as Golden Girls Triumph!
After a very successfull able bodied Olympics, Great Britains cyclists are yet again doing us proud in Athens, this time at the Paralympic Games. The first to strike Gold for the Cycling team were two cyclists who we featured recently here on BritishCycling.org.uk. Racing in the B1-3 tandem time trial, Aileen McGlynn from Glasgow and her pilot, Ellen Hunter, from Wrexham not only won Gold for their country but set a new World Record. Their event is held over 1Km and with Ellen Hunter steering the tandem, and the partially blind Aileen McGlynn on the back, the pair covered the km in 1 min 11, with an opening lap of 21.188, quite an outstanding ride which saw them racing away at over 50kph from the opposition, relegating the Americans and Australians to the minor placings. Its the first Paralympics for both riders, and prior to going to Athens, Aileen said that it's the biggest goal of her short sporting career so far. For Ellen, the result is perhaps even more astonishing and for sure, here is a rider who is a great inspiration to anyone who has had to overcome obstacles to reach their goals in cycling. Not only is Ellen a mum to her two children and a wife to husband Paul (also representing GB in Athens), Ellen is also a racing cyclist who has come back better than ever from an accident when she was told she would never cycle again. Ellen in the space of a year has gone from lying in a hospital bed with a broken back to preparing for the biggest sporting competition in the World. Now both her and Aileen are Paralympic Champions! Our congratulations to both of them.

On how difficult it is to be the fourth to compete and then have to wait: "When I saw the Start List, I thought it was maybe too early but in fact, it was quite good, because we just focused on our race and gave it everything." About her training in Manchester while living in Glasgow: "I am working full time and have to travel to Manchester to train with Ellen; it is quite difficult, but manageable." Ellen ... "We are still in shock. It's the first time we have raced against women athletes in Paralympic Games. It's such a great feeling and we are looking forward to the other races." On her feelings about her comeback after the accident last year: "A year ago, I couldn't even dream of being in the Paralympic Games. I had a lot of support from the team and the chance of training in the Manchester Velodrome and making a come back." On her qualification and that of her husband: "It was unexpected. We thought only one would be selected and that the other one would care for the children and our work. When both of us were selected, we had to change all our plans. Our family is now looking after the children." To read the feature on Aileen McGlynn and Ellen Hunter, click here >>>> Mens 4k Pursuit-Open(B1-3)
Manager Dave Mellor: we will do the best we can The Great Britains Womens team manager Dave Mellor is working closely with the Paralympic team in Athens and is featured in a report for the Paralympics website. In the report, Dave admits "Half of the team is made up of full-time athletes funded by the national lottery. The other half is made up of amateurs who have full-time jobs but who hit the selection and took their ticket to the Games. They all train with different coaches and for the final preparation SHERGOLD coaches all of them". For the Paralympic preparation, the full-time athletes Daniel GORDON, Darren KENNY, Gary ROSBOTHAM-WILLIAMS and Barney STOREY went to a training camp at the open Velodrome in Hyeres, France for ten days. Meanwhile, Ellen and Paul HUNTER, Aileen McGLYNN and Ian SHARP trained in Manchester. In view of their long stay in Athens, all the athletes went home for two days after their preparation before flying from Manchester and London to Athens on 10 September. "Training was not so efficient in the first two days. We have quite a big team and not so much staff, so it took a few days to prepare all the bikes and have everything running smoothly," explained MELLOR. Concerning the team expectations, MELLOR admits, "medals are nice, but we will do the best we can. You never know what will happen. There haven't been so many competitions before, so we don't know the other athletes. If we can have better personal best times, it'll be good. And if that brings medals, then it'll be the best." "The favourites in the team are the athletes funded by the lottery. They are full-time athletes so the expectations are higher and so is the pressure," explains the head coach, "but the girls [Ellen HUNTER and Aileen McGLYNN] are doing very well." "We got two medals in Sydney 2000 and we definitively hope for more," adds MELLOR, "but you can never tell."
