CHILTERN CLASSICS GET UNDER WAY

The Chiltern Classics got under way last weekend and continue for a further 5 weeks with this weekends Reliability Trial run by the Hemel Hempstead CC around the beautiful Chiltern countryside. HQ with good parking, refreshments, etc. The HQ is at the Hemel Hempstead CC clubroom just off the A4251 near the Red Lion pub on the border with Kings Langley & Hemel. See the club website for details: www.hemelcycling.org.uk

There is a choice of 100km or 50km, with the longer route also having the benefit of a roadside tea & cake point just under 2/3 round at the top of the wickedly steep Small Dean Lane. There are 3 time standards, 3:15 - 3:45, 3:45 - 4:15 and 4:15 - 5 hours. There will be a strict limit on group sizes of about 15 riders. Several groups within each time band will be despatched at approx 5 min intervals, with the first group off at 9 am.

The series continues the following week with the Harp RC hilly with the HQ again being in the Hemel Hempstead CC clubroom. Then it is the Edgware RC with their HQ at Denham Country Park. The week after is the turn of the Willesden CC event, HQ is Ruislip Manor Farm, and is concluded on the 29 February with the CC Luton event starting from Edlesborough Village Hall (south west of Dunstable). A different circuit each week - different hills - different scenery

All Reliability Trials have time bands to suit your pace. Entry fee 2.50/3.00. Certificates awarded to riders completing within their selected time band. The Chiltern Classics Reliability Trials returns this year with a Sextet of events. A different circuit each week different hills - different scenery. The following information is currently available but please contact the individual organisers for greater details: -

Hemel Hempstead CC Sunday 1st February
The trial starts and finishes at the HHCC clubhouse in Nash Mills Lane, nr Kings Langley, Hemel Hempstead. The route travels out through Chesham, Wendover and Chinnor returning through Speen, Gt. Missenden, Kings Langley. It is a hilly circuit climbing some of the well-known Chiltern Hills of Chinnor and the notorious one in four Small Dean Lane, a killer but mercifully short; also Frith Hill is included in the route. The 50 km route option turns short of Wendover returning through Chesham.

Harp RC Sunday 8th February
This third reliability trial is the well-known Harp Hilly Hundred starting and finishing also at the Hemel Hempstead CC clubroom. This starts off following a similar route as the Hemel event through to Chesham then it takes on its own character taking on the hilly bits of the northern Chilterns through Berkhamsted, Whipsnade (the infamous Bison Hill) then onto Aston Hill near Halton and tracking back through Tring, Ivinghoe Beacon. Whelpley Hill via White Hill to the clubroom for a well earned rest.

Edgware RC Sunday 15th February
A slight relief from the previous hilly weeks as you will be delighted with this attractive undulating route, This event starts at the Denham Country Club and travels out to the Thames valley and at Marlow goes south on a fast flattish section through Windsor returning to Denham.

Willesden CC Sunday 22nd February
The fifth event starts around the Ruislip area and travels out to Bledlow Ridge & Cryers Hill.

CC Luton Sunday 29th February
This is the sixth and last event of the Chiltern Classics this year. The route commences from the village hall in Edlesborough and travels through Wing out to Swanbourne where the route turns to meander through the attractive Buckinghamshire lanes past Wingrave onto Aldbury up the infamous but thankfully short Toms Hill towards Redbourn where the route turns again through some hilly bits to Studham and back home to Edlesborough.
