Entry Level races at Hillingdon in London

West London's Hillingdon Cycle Circuit will provide nine new races for non-members of British Cycling in which 4th category members can also participate. They will be fortnightly on Friday evenings at 7pm, starting on 30 April. Each race will last 20 minutes with an entry fee of only 3 to cover British Cycling insurance and hire of the circuit.

There will only be nominal prizes and no BC category ranking points. The races will be on the same evenings as women-only races starting at 7.30pm and lasting up to one hour, a continuation of the trial series held last year. Non-members are also welcome in these events which built up last year from just four riders in the first race up to 17 later in the season. The organiser each Friday will be Bill Butterworth and Doug Collins of the Twickenham CC club, under the general organisation of British Cycling West Thames Promotions which will, as it did last year, cover any subsidy needed to ensure these relatively low-entry events.

This promotional organisation is a subsidiary of Central Division. One of the British Cycling West Thames officials, Stuart Benstead, says: "The success of our Tuesday series enables us to move the sport forward with these new events to encourage newcomers.

We are encouraged by the attitude of riders in the Tuesday series who have supported us in these and other developments. "We are indebted to Bill Butterworth who, in the same weeks, will be running the popular LVRC races on Wednesday evenings, but racing himself at a very high level in the intermediate weeks. The Twickenham CC are major organisers in their own right, while we also have 22 other clubs who 'staff' BC West Thames events. We are, however, looking for at least one more to cover for the loss of a couple of clubs who now unfortunately have minimal membership."

Hillingdon Cycle Circuit: The circuit is in Springfield Road, Hayes, on the right hand side, 600m. from its junction with the Uxbridge Road (A4020) and only 2 miles from junction 3 of the M4 via the A312, Hayes By-pass. Springfield Road, (off A4020), Hayes, Middlesex. Circuit - 1,565 metres Width - 6 metres The Hillingdon Cycle Circuit, a full road width and just under a mile around. The circuit is also home to a thriving cycle racing programme throughout the year and is also a venue for National Championships.
