New Chairman for Team Darenth Team Darenths chairman and founding light, Bill Lewis has modestly let us know that its time for him to think about easing back on the quantity of his commitment to the club, so he can concentrate on quality involvement and offer guidance to newer parents whove come on to the committee as they pick up on running the club and organising it for FUN and success of all members. Hes resigning as chairman and becoming deputy chair, where hell have the responsibility of helping the new chairman, Michael Humphreys, find his way through all sorts of work that none of us know the half of. We wish every success to the both of them! Bills long-term experience of cycling clubs, young riders, competition, sports administration and all things cycling cannot be bottled, so Michael needs to keep getting his supply direct from source. Michael Humphreys first came to club about a year ago with his son Hugo, whod been scouted by a club coach at a summer camp. Hes set about organising a major road race in July 2004 for the club and is working with other youth-oriented clubs in the SE to produce a league for next year too. He went on a British Cycling coaching course in September and October so will be taking groups of riders from now on. Hes run voluntary organisations before, but still isnt sure what possible use this experience could be for the unique task of running a cycling club thats already been made so incredibly successful its the best in the country.
Bill Lewis hands over a Great Britain World Championships jersey autographed in Edmonton by Nicole Cook and David Millar to Team Darenths incoming chair, Michael Humphreys (right). Bill Lewis has also donated a shield as a perpetual trophy to the club. With riders competing monthly for this annual award, the shield forms one of the clubs principal awards. The rounds can be based on the BC Go-Ride format the club is accredited to apply, or can be run on hard surfaces in wet weather. In such a large club, competition in every round has been strong, with the shield winner, Tarryn Jarvis having close rivals from other age groups, boys and girls. The picture shows Tarryn with the shield and all the winners by category.

Bill Lewis is going to be joined by Peter Stone as the clubs new vice presidents. Peter was many things previously, including the head of Cycling Time Trials. Bills been a top-level international commissaire and judge. They will be able to make sure the club is represented at the highest level, whilst its obvious they also really enjoy the ground-level sport our members need. Peter also presented the club with an autographed Gan jersey of Chris Boardmans, the rider who took the world record in 1993 and again in 1996 for the greatest distance covered in one hour. Its a splendid addition to an already plush clubhouse.
