MILDENHALL ROUND-UP

MILDENHALL EVENTS FOR 2003

“Mildenhall Cycling Club is still trying to trace nearly seventy cyclists who at some time during the past 50 years, have been members.

“We are very interested to locate as many, if not all, of these so that we can invite them all to the 50th Anniversary Reunion in the Riverside Hotel. It already promises to be one very special gathering of so many current and ex-members,” said Mark Burchett on behalf of the Club.

He added, “We are encouraged to continue searching for those unaccounted for, after several recent notable successes. These include tracking down Adrian Barrance, Charlie Palfrey, and Ron Morley. Adrian, who was a member of the successful 1984 Lands End to John O’Groats team and left the Club the year after, has been living and working in Honduras since 1990.”

There is a complete list on the Club’s website, www.mildenhallcc.org.uk of anyone ever known to have been a member. It shows whether the Club has contact details and if so, whether they’ve expressed an interest in attending the reunion on Sunday 8th June. This is the highlight of the Mildenhall Club’s Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2003.

The other high-profile event specifically organised for this year, is the Celebration Circuit Time-Trial, which takes place the weekend before. It will have a ‘Tour de France’ style start courtesy of a raised ramp donated by event sponsor, Portaramp of Thetford. It is hoped that the prize list of £500 will attract some of the UK’s top riders, with a good mixture of Roadmen and Time-Trialists.

The sporting course (BS7) starts in The Public House car park and goes through Gazeley, Dalham, Ousden, Hargrave and Barrow. Men/ Vets & Espoirs complete two laps (26miles), while the Women & Juniors will complete one lap (13miles). The steepest hill on the course is a 1 in 5 at Ousden, where there will be a special prize for the fastest rider to the top of the hill from the bottom. There will also be a prize for the first team from a Club also celebrating their 50th anniversary. Headquarters for the event will be at Barrow Primary school and entries close on 20th May 2003.

All the current members are asked to meet at the Clubroom on Sunday 6th April at 2pm for a Club photograph, which will be used in the Club History ‘The first 50 years’ to be published in time for the Reunion.
Details of all the events planned and merchandise are available on the Club’s website at www.mildenhallcc.org.uk, where there will also be an email link to register your interest in the Reunion.
