Eagle School of Motoring World Cycle Speedway Team Cup

Astley & Tyldesley Cycle Speedway Club are delighted to announce that the Eagle School of Motoring will be sponsoring the World Cycle Speedway Team Cup to be held at Astley on Saturday 2nd August. The firm's proprietor Steve Mills was a founder member of the A & T club in 1989, and he is delighted to be supporting the most prestigious event that the club has staged in its history.

The match will be one of two major finals taking place that weekend, with the World Cycle Speedway Individual Final at Bury on Sunday 3rd August, concluding what promises to be an exciting weekend of the very best of cycle speedway. Riders and teams from England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Holland, Poland, USA and Australia will compete for the World Championships, being held in the North of England for the first time since the Championships started in 1958. A full weekend's racing will utilise both the Astley & Tyldesley and Bury tracks, starting off with qualifying events, culminating in both the Team and Individual Finals.

For those people who have never witnessed the cycling discipline of speedway, it consists of a series of short, concentrated sprint races where four riders battle for supremacy around four laps of a 75 metres shale surfaced oval circuit. Fast racing and physical contact is the norm, as cycle speedway serves up a spectacle unrivalled in other cycling disciplines. Riders each contest several races in an event, with positions determined by overall points scored during the event.

Scotland manager Dave Blinston has announced his squad for the Championships. Former British Champion Pete Young, of Poole, captains the team, and he was in tremendous form to race unbeaten in the recent Home International at Newport, when Scotland finished second to England. Kevin Burns of Leicester, Elliott Jones of Eaton (Norfolk) and Dave Frith of Coventry are all vastly experienced internationals, with the highly promising Alan Mackie of the Edinburgh based Scotia team completing the line-up.
