DataPhonics Racing Team 2003 Line-up

Ross Edgar, Great Britain and Dataphonics rider

A new UK team was announced in the last few days with the merger of the Cambridge-based CCA/DataPhonics Racing Team and last years Merseyside formation, Cycleways. The new team will compete in 2003 with the continued backing of United Rental Group Ltd and with new support from Terry Dolan Cycles.

The merger allows us to have a strong representation across the age spectrum said team President, Stuart Hallam today. Terry Dolan added I am particularly pleased to be working with the DataPhonics team as they perform the all-important development bridging roll for riders to move from club to international level

Right: Mark Kelly with his silver medal from the national Criterium Championships.

For the seventh consecutive season, the DataPhonics team will invest in the development of younger riders with the junior squad being strengthened by the arrival of 2002 G.H.S. 10 winner, Tom Walters, who is still a first year junior. Another new signing is British Junior Scratch champion, Mark Cavendish. Former youth medallist, Bruce Edgar and sprinter Jak Kenton-Spraggan complete the junior line-up. It is hoped that promising Essex youth rider, Ryan Smith, will also receive dispensation to ride with the juniors this year.

The DataPhonics squad at Under 22 level is arguably the strongest in the country and is lead by Commonwealth Games rider, Mark Kelly, silver medallist in the 2002 British Espoir Road Race Championships, as well as the Elite Criterium and 20 km. championships. In British events, French-based Kelly will have the support of other DataPhonics exiles, Chris Penketh, 2002 British Junior Timetrial champion, Ben Hallam, the former junior Pursuit and BBAR champion and Kris Story, the former Junior Scratch and Youth Pursuit champion. Espoirs in regular domestic competition include James Hewitt, Glenn Smith, Nathan Harman and Duncan Hallam.

The timetrial assault in 2003 will be lead by Stuart Shawcross, a 49 minute 25 miler, who recently won the Chesterfield Spire Christmas 10 for the second successive year. Shawcross will also target the track individual and team pursuit disciplines.

Commonwealth Games medallist and multi-national champion and record holder, Ross Edgar, will head the DataPhonics sprint squad. The remainder of the team sprint squad will be Robin Thompson, Lee Povey and club coach and multi World Masters Champion, Dave Le Grys.

The Masters line-up will feature former World, Olympic and Commonwealth medallist, Willi Moore. Gareth Smith, Bob Rouse and ex professional Steve Barnsley will be supporting Moore in an assault on the domestic programme and the World Track Masters championships.

The teams support staff will feature Terry Dolan and David Penketh as Team Managers, Dr. Auriel Forrester (the former World Masters Champion and Record holder) as Sports Scientist and Le Grys as coach. Willi Moore will support Dave Le Grys in the coaching of the clubs team pursuit squads. VeloRiders owner, Simon Martin, will continue to ride for the team and no doubt Roger Martin will have reason to feature the teams white, orange and royal blue strip in his photographic activity!
