Mildenhall Cycling Club’s annual cycling-festival,
the ‘Mildenhall Cycling Rally’, will once again take place
over the August Bank-Holiday (Saturday 23rd - Monday 25th August) using
the town’s Riverside Middle School as a base.
It will feature all the regular favourites, but the 2003 event promises
to be a bit more special than usual as the Club will be celebrating its
50th year. It will include the British Cycling Men’s National 8km
Championship, which should also be a fitting finale to the 2003 grass-track
season.
Mark Burchett, one of the organisers, added “As well as the grass-track
which forms the centre-piece of the Rally, the Forest Heath District Council
backed event includes Cyclo-Cross, Mountain Bike Races, Children’s
Sports, Children’s Duathlon, BSCA Children’s Skill Tests,
Audax Rides, Bicycle Orienteering, Touring Routes, Cycle Jumble, family
Evening Entertainment, or the alternative Quiz Night.
On the Sunday and Monday the Rally boasts one of the largest Trade Shows
for the public in the UK, as well as extra attractions laid on for the
children. After last year’s stunning display by stunt cyclist Jez
Avery, the Rally will also on both the Sunday and Monday afternoon’s
include the Elmy Cycles Trials Display Team, a group of very competent
teenagers from Ipswich who will provide a demonstration of cyclo-trials
and their skills.
The Rally offers campsite facilities for tents and caravans, which must
be booked in advance. The organisers’ stress the importance of doing
this early, as last year the site reached capacity nearly two months before
the event!
The Mildenhall Club will publish all the details on their website during
February/March at http://www.mildenhallrally.org.uk, which includes the
booking forms to print off for the evening entertainment, camping and
the competitive events. Email enquiries can be sent to info@mildenhallrally.org.uk.
This is also available in their Information Brochure, which will be available
at Easter. To get your copy send a first or second class stamp to Vera
Staines. 7 Jellicoe Place, Thetford, Norfolk. IP24 2JU.
