SOUTHEND WHEELERS AWARD NIGHT

Southend Wheelers, the local cycling club for Southend (Rochford & Castle Point Borough Councils) recently held its annual prize presentation. Riders of all ages from the club came together to collect their awards for the past season, a year in which the club received an Awards for All lottery grant.

The evening belonged to Jenny Patience who received the Cecil 10 mile shield for the fastest club lady, two trophies for the fastest lady in the Wednesday evening scratch league and veterans league. During the year Jenny, who only started cycling a few years ago broke all the Ladies club records for 10, 25 and 50 miles (a record which she broke three times!).

Not content with this she finished second overall in the Ladies National CTC Best All Rounder competition, again setting new records for 10, 25 and 50 miles, she also finished 14th overall in the Ladies National Best British All Rounder competition.

Other prize winners included Edward Knowler (junior), winner of the most improved rider award. Arthur Knowler - Club Best All Rounder ; Bob Barber - Club Road Race Champion; Kevin Barker - Club Hill Climb and Club Cyclocross Champion; Phil Holloway - best placed club rider in the Essex Road Race League; Roy Godbeer at 73 years of age won an award for the best placed club rider in the Age Related Championships in the League of Veteran Racing Cyclists.

Southend Wheelers are holding their first event the Cyclo Sportive ride on Sunday 2nd February 2003 starting at 9am from East Hanningfield Village Hall. Distances vary from 36km for the young and novice riders, 80km for the club cyclist and 120km for the elite riders. A Route sheet will be provided with refreshments at the finish the entry fee is �3 with all the proceeds going to charity.
