Comments from the President of British Cycling, Brian Cookson, on current matters in the world of cycling.

About this time of year, many people ask me why they should be members of British Cycling. What's in it for them? What good are we doing? What are the benefits? Current members are considering renewing their membership, former members are considering whether to re-join, and potential new members are considering whether British Cycling is the right body for them. So here are a few reasons why I think British Cycling membership is worthwhile;

1. Bringing Success inCycling If you want to be part of an organisation that is bringing unprecedented levels of success to cycling in Great Britain, in many of our key disciplines, join British Cycling.

2. Taking Cycling to the Schools: If you want to be part of an organisation that is bringing experience of cycling to schools up and down the country, introducing thousands of youngsters to our sport, then join British cycling.

3. Facilities: If you want to be part of an organisation that is working with the funding bodies, local authorities, development agencies, etc, to provide and maintain road, track and off-road facilities all across the country, then join British Cycling.

4. Defending the Members: If you want to be part of an organisation that is working to defend our right to race on the public highway, insists on high standards of safety and organisation, and provides guidance and support for those who want to do this responsibly and properly, then join British Cycling.

5. Coaching our Children: If you want to be part of an organisation that has a modern coaching set-up, a proper progression pathway for young talent, and that has Child Protection Policies and other procedures necessary in the modern age, then join British Cycling.

6. Insurance: If you want to be part of an organisation that provides the best possible insurance and legal protection for its members, even to the extent of covering its members when they compete in events organised by other bodies with less comprehensive insurance, then join British Cycling.

7. Developing the Sport: If you want to be part of an organisation that, for every 1 you put in, secures another 5 from UK Sport, Sport England and other bodies and sponsors, to develop the sport and ensure high levels of achievement for our inspirational stars, then join British Cycling.

8. Helping you progress: If you want to be part of an organisation that has a category system, through which you can chart your own progress and development, then join British Cycling.

9. Democratic and Accountable: If you want to be part of a democratic membership organisation, that is open and transparent, publishes its annual accounts and is publicly accountable, then join British Cycling.

10. Internationally Recognised: If you want to be a part of the governing body that is nationally and internationally recognised, by the Government, UCI, IOC, etc, then join British Cycling.

11. Working Hard for Members: And finally, if you want to be part of an organisation that is working very hard to review its performance in every aspect of its activities, acknowledges that there are some things that it could do better, and welcomes those with ideas, enthusiasm and commitment to work within it, then join British Cycling.

I hope that helps anybody who has been considering the matter to make up their minds. If you are a new member, I welcome you, if you are re-joining after a period away, then welcome back, and if you are a loyal member renewing your subscription then thank you for your continued support.

Brian Cookson: President, British Cycling
