61st Tour of the Peaks

PREMIER CALENDAR EVENT; Sunday, 31st August 2003; RACE WEBSITE:

The Tour of the Peaks is the oldest one day classic race on the British calendar, so says the races website, with the first edition taking place in 1943 and no race has been dominated in the way Life Repair's Mark Lovatt has for the last five years. Five races, five wins (I can think of parallels here) and after his 2nd place in the Havant Grand Prix and his taking over of the lead in the Premier Calendar, few would bet against Mark doing it again this year.

Sunday's race starts at 11.00am and marks its return to the centre of Buxton for both the race start and finish. It will also be the final counting event in the season long British Cycling Premier Calendar competition. Starting from Market Place in Buxton, the race takes in some of the most spectacular scenery in the Peak District National Park. Although the exact course has varied over the years, it is undoubtedly one of the toughest races in the UK. There are eight King of the Mountains primes, including two ascents of the fearsome Snake Pass.

FAVOURITES
In a field this size, the number of favourites are many but the odds on one is Mark Lovatt and you can never discount his Life Repair/Litespeed teammates John Tanner or Kevin Dawson. Others include Anthony Malarczyk, Chris Newton, Brian Kenneally, Duncan Urquhart, Kristian House, Rory Wyley, Malcolm Elliott (winner 1983), John Charlesworth (winner 1991), Matthew Stephens, Danny Axford, Julian Winn while among the dark horses are Leigh Cowell, Alastair Kay, Paul Manning, Matthew Melville, Andy Collis, Roy Chamberlain, James Flanagan, and Craig Cooke.
